re: NYE.
last time I remember going out in manchester on NYE, we had a really hard time getting transport home - buses and taxis may be better these days as I'm recalling my student days... You may want to pre-book a taxi - rather than walk 8 miles home in the freezing cold.0 -
Hi just a quick response- vermillion cinnabar has a great repuatation - however its not in the city centre....Its near city's stadium I think. so it would be a taxi ride out of the city centre....
If you want modern food and also somewhere you can stay all evening in bar/club style try
'room',
'the living room'
'the restaurant bar and grill'
'bluu'
'obsidian'

Manchester Museum is fab, I go here all the time
, not been on the big wheel but I've heard its good. How about a show at one of the theatres? House of Fraser is good for a mooch too.
Museum of Science and Industry is okay, they usually have different bits and bobs on, also have a look at the bar thats in the Hilton, Cloud 13 I think it's called, its a posh (quite expensive but worth it) bar half way up the hilton tower thats got brilliant views. Gallerys are good too. Curry Mile is good, have a look out for the 'Spicy Hut', won loads of awards and well known for being the best one there.0 -
Some of the others have got certain restaurants right: Yang Sing's and Koreana are well worth eating at, but there is another place often overlooked which is called 'The Armenian Taverna'. It's a basement restaurant on Albert Square on the right-hand side as though you are stood with your back to the Town Hall. It's great food (a cross between Middle Eastern and Greek, I think) and I can't believe I didn't even know it existed for so long! Yumyumyumyumyum! Please call me 'Pickle'
No More Buying Books: ???
No More Buying DVDs: ???
NMB Toiletries ??? and I've gone back for my Masters at the University of Use Ups!
Proud to be dealing with her debts 1198~

Don't know if this would float your boat (and maybe you've already done it) but Manchester Art Gallery has an amazing collection of pre-raphelite stuff. Donation to get in. They also have an additional exhibition on atpresent - female surrealists - including Frida Kahlo - but you have to pay to get in that bit
Did you know that on a regular working day you can go into the Town hall and look around. Just present yourself at reception and you can sign in. They have a ballroom upstairs and the Walls are covered in murals by Victorian artist Ford Maddox Brown. I think they are pretty amazing
I am aware I sound like a geek  and I do apologise but only mention these things because I think they're great and perhaps it's something different to do. Museum of science and industry is interesting too and someone mentioned the museum of Manchester
Have a great time0 -
