RBS in England to Become Williams & Glynn's?

  • I would be more interested to find out what the balance sheets of the new bank will look like - will they be completely clean or will the RBS toxic debts be also transferred?
Will RBS shareholders get a share in the new bank??

IMO it makes sense that any new bank, such as W&Glyns will be given a "safe" send off.

I'm sure you're right. But then the new owners will decide what happens; which branches are retained etc.

I signed up with National Provincial, which became Natwest, which became RBS which apparently will now become something else. But my branch premises have stayed the same throughout.

NatWest didn't become RBS, it's still NatWest. It's just owned by RBS. If the rumours are true there will be no changes to NatWest, only the RBS branches in England and Wales.

This is an attempt to inject further competition into the UK market. Lloyds banking group have been told to sell of a lot of their branches and bring them back under the old TSB brand - which would suggest that they will drop the 'TSB' from 'Lloyds TSB' and simply revert to being Lloyds Bank, while 'TSB' becomes a new competitor company.

In Scotland Halifax Bank of Scotland is to merge with Lloyds TSB Scotland and the new branding will be "Bank of Scotland".

Seems to be some truth in the rumours. Anyone have any memories of the bank?

Yep. Used to bank with them in Reading. Great bank but unfortunately the bank manager was arrested for helping himself to the banks funds.

It would be good to see the old TSB "the bank that likes to say yes", back in its old form, run by as many as the good people still left, before the merger. They were way ahead of other banks with all accounts being updated in real time. I know they are now all like this but at the time it was a novelty and i wonder what other firsts they could bring to the industry.

As it will be to see the good old Lloyds bank without the tsb element. They were the thoroughbreds in the banking world.

According to that, Santander are getting the branches, but are going to use the Williams and Glynn name.

I would have preferred a new company, Tesco Bank or Virgin to get them to allow more competition. Newcastle has 3 Santander branches. It doesn't need 1 more in RBS. Especially with their reputation.

It would be great to see Lloyds Bank back on the high street, 'back in the day' I remember all the staff being knowledgeable, professional & helpful. The particular branch I remember using knew all the regular customers by name, they were always able to answer questions and if they said they would get someone to call you and sort out a problem, they did!

When it merged a lot of the small branches closed, and I think it left a sour taste with a lot of staff, now (like all the rest) most of the staff are just after the quick sale and don't really care about service.

And yes, I still bank with Lloyds, just don't like the changes!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!
