My postie actually asked me one day if its okay for him to leave any signed for items or items too big for letter box at door or in back garden. i said yes cos its a hassle getting to sorting office. but i think its to save them the hassle of writing a card and then taking parcel back to sorting place.
i suppose it depends on where you live regarding how safe it is to leave stuff at door or in back garden .:j0 -

is it definitely royal mail? i know couriers, catalogue companies etc. (next, for example) will leave parcels on doorsteps or in wheelie bins, but our postman never has.
Say you never received it, see what toysrus do then lol!
Mine was delivered by a royal mail van not a regular postie. I heard a noise and I went out to see what it was and it was the man leaving them in my porch. There was no recorded or special delivery sticker on the boxes so the royal mail man hasn't done anything wrong. Down to TRU me thinks!0 -
Collected a few bits from Argos today & calmly asked after the Hammies. Chap said yes we have had some in & there was a box of them beneath the counter. My eyes lit up as there was quite a few but another chap came over & said they are all reserved.....
Close but no cigar. I'd have hated buying one only for the customer with the res code to have gone without so it's probably a good job 2nd chap spoke up.0 -
My posties all know me due to DH being one and if they have a parcel for me at work on a Saturday then they will pass it over to my local home address postie (same sorting office). Also my postie will hand me my post on a Saturday if he sees me in the street - which again is NOT ALLOWED!!! But some do bend the rules slightly to make their job easier. Their job isn't as easy as some would make out.
THAT SAID: they should not be leaving items in full view of a passing Joe Bloggs especially items that require a signature. The safest route is to take them to the depot and leave a card (which yes they HATE doing especially when it is pouring down!!)Cost of this Hamster Hunt (inc postage):
2 x Num Nums - £36.70, 1 x Chunk £13.50, 1 x Chunk £15.50, Slide £26.89, House £25.94, Car £14.99, Ball £9.99, Surfboard £9.99, Skateboard £9.99, Wheel £24.19 TOTAL:£187.68
A big thanks to you MSE'ers - especially Maximouse :A0 -

I've had 2 parcels left in my half full wheelie bin by postie in past month. I caught the postie the other day and asked if it had been him (I was so angry!) I explained (in a very nice way) that this was not a good idea as sometimes we are away on holiday or whatever and we ask a neighbour to put our bin out for collection. Can you imagine if you came home to find a note through your door saying parcel in wheelie bin. I thought it was just my crazy postie....but wonder if they are being told to do that....? I have a BBQ they could leave it under, or a small storage shed thing that is not locked...why oh why would you put something in a wheelie bin full of rubbish!!!???0
