Its easy as pie
Simply goto (For example) a folder with music in
RIGHT click the music folder and select COPY
Then goto the backup drive and wherever you want the folder to go RIGHT click and select PASTE
It will then COPY the contents over
Once copied make sure theyre there ok (Open a few up to make sure they work) then go back to the document on C drive and DELETE them all
Thank you for that! I must admit, I am a little nervous of moving my Photos but I will give it a go with a small number. Am I safe to completely delete them From my C drive) once moved to Ext HD?0 -
As ive said. Once youve COPIED them over and OPENED them (To make sure its worked). Then sure, its fine to delete them
Ideally though any important photos should be backed upto disc:idea:0 -
One other point.....you need to clear out some space before a defrag will run properly, so I'd leave that 'till you've done everything else...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
As jacks just pointed out, only defrag once youve moved all the files to your backup drive
might be an idea to run hijack too ~
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
Hijack gives us an idea of whats running on your computer thats really not worth having:idea:0 -
I like a prog called windirstat http://www.brothersoft.com/windirstat-62227.html
it gives a graphic view of what is on your h/drive -big files are shown as big blocks and smaller files are shown smaller. Also the blocks are coloured according to what type of file it is , eg. dvd , mp3 etc.0 -
Also might be worth moving some installed programs over to the second drive -wouldn't recommend for anything thats regarded as 'always useful to have to hand' eg word/excel/pdf viewers etc but big programs like games could be installed to a second 'program files' folder on your bigger drive saving space on C:
will need to uninstall these from your C drive and re-install to your second drive but should free decent amounts of space quite quickly.... might even seem performance improvements having your OS on one drive and the 'big' program being run on a second as you'll have less of a restriction from hard disk data access speed bottlenecks0 -
Many thanks for all the replies and advice! I deleted old software, moved some of my photos over to 'F' drive and so far, gained 4GB! I also did a defrag with the advice above.
Spending time today doing some more housekeeping on PC.

Thanks for that, Dave. I have nearly 5 thousand photos on my C drive. I need to buy some DVD RW and park them onto these.0
