little advice if I may guys
Dh went to the RAF recruitment office today. (he was made redundent on Monday) Hes 30 in feb and was told their over subscribed to the police (what he really wants) till 2011! All they have is caterer for the GCSE's he has. Which he doesnt want. He forgot to ask about regiment.
My question is should he risk not getting accepted for the police in the end and wait (which for his age could mean never joining if they turn him down) or join the regiment, wait 3-5 years and then try for the military police?
Or try for the police in another force (army really, navy bases are too far away and am not so sure about his sea legs)
He currently thinks he should get any job and wait it out. Calling every few months to see if their recruiting yet. were talking tonight but what do you think?

If he wants to be a policeman, then he should go for that job. Going RAF Regiment and moving will be a harder path, they may not even let him move if they are full.
I see that policeman required 2 Grades at C, well being that if he was 30, he could of took his GCSE's over 14 years ago, proves nothing really.
When i joined the RAF, i had Maths B, and Science C, the rest were D and below. I required 3x GCSE's @ C & above, but i had gained a City & Guilds in Electrical Installations.
I applied, and i asked if they would accept this. I was going into an undermanned trade (Avionics) and they accepted me. A different story now, i have that many qualifications through my job, i could prob leave & re-join in job with more qualifications needed.
What grades does he really have.?
GCSE's, BTEC, NVQ's, AMA's, City & Guilds, Diplomas etc. (All these count)
What about airman aircrew

The RAF Police is currently over subscribed and as the AFCO say 'full' for a considerable time. I don't see this changing in the short term. As A_O rightly points out joining the RAF Regiment is not in any shape or form the RAF Police and the liklihood of being allowed to change is very low indeed, as the Regiment is undermanned and the RAF Police over manned!!
If he wants a military police career there is always the RMP as well as the RN Regulating Branch, but they have to do 5 years as something else before going down the Reggie route, unless that has changed. The RMP is a large organisation and has a wide variety of specialisations depending on your particular interests. If it is policing he is interested in this is probably the best alternate, although he will be behind the drag curve on promotion and career profile as he will be in Phase 1 training with 18 yr olds! Hope he is fit!
The MOD Police are about to be cut back by some 900 so I am told. You can be posted anywhere in the MOD Police and could end up in the far reaches of the UK. They will probably still recruit but at reduced levels.0 -
Airman Aircrew sounds fab! BUT not a prayer.
We cant find his GCSE's but I can tell you all D or lower. Police want 2, G or higher.
Its tempting to take 2 years and study given the top age of those jobs. With all this new system, NVQ's etc what your be the quickest was of getting 5 GCSE's? Can you take say 1 NVQ and it counts as 3 GCSE's?
The Ministry Police sounds interesting. I have had a quick look but they dont appear to be hireing. I will keep at it tho.The will to save every money saving penny we can0 -

RMP was our other thoughts. Do his term in the regiment then apply for the RMP. Fit..................hum...................LOL. He doing the marines training to get fit at the mo. But with him being job less he has nothing but time hehe.
All my research has been on the police so am unfamilier with the regiment. Does anybody know what the premotion prospects are like and wages? Thanks. The will to save every money saving penny we can0 -
Have you considered PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) jobs? I know several people who have used that as a route into the police service.[0

Fliss M,
I would take a look at this, and see if they class these qualifications as anything.

I would ring up the AFCO and have a word to see if these count towards anything.0 -

You either want to go RAF Regiment or do something else from the outset as I really wouldnt want anyone to use the RAF Regiment as a route to anything other than soldiering.
As they are under manned you could speculate that promotion should be boyant! Same pay scale as the rest of the RAF. The only difference is they now have the Lance Corporal rank in the RAF Regiment as well. This is to ensure that section commanders usually senior SAC's get some additional money and have a rank to show they are in charge.
If you want to be a soldier in the RAF then the Regiment it for him!!0 -
My hubby was in the Regiment. Whilst great for 10 years as a "singly" not really great for married/with kids. He tried to change trades twice and each time it wasnt approved despite studying for his Gcses & Highers then degree. In the end he was advised to leave, wait a year and rejoin in his chosen trade. Once your in the Regiment it is really hard to get out, and not made easy for you at all.
The police and the Regiment are not comparable at all. Except both are on the lower pay spectrum/more work!
If he want to top up his education many local colleges run adult education courses which you can get full funding on and you can complete most HNC/Diploma's in a year.
My advice would be to join another Service, dont accept Regiment, my dad used to tell loads of people they could join up as Regiment and remuster, and it is a bit of a joke on squadrons the amount of "qualified" people who do join thinking they can change latter on.
Good luck whatever he decidesAny hints/tips advice is appreciated
