In fact, I had a similar appreciation of the impression given to non Londoners by inevitable focus on Banking in the discussion about House Prices and the city yesterday. Looking at it through the eyes of someone who was neither a Londoner nor familiar with the separation of the City, let alone the subdivides there, it occured to me London would seem even more confusing than it it is, and got a glimmer of how the SE was so misunderstood.0 -

never met Buik, but know people that work with him, he's supposed to be quite a funny guy
I got a job offer from Prebons but ended up at UBS. Lucky escape I reckon!0 -
Thanks for the clarification Insp, he always looks like Mr Angry on TV, so the thought of him being even more angry was quite scary. Good to know he's got a funny side though when he's not being interviewed on serious matters. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Not really, I for one know the difference between investment banks and high street banks stock brokers etc. etc..
I know some one from the areas we talked about yesterday (well is based there when in London) and is, well not to be specific worth over £1/2bn. But he is the only person I really know in central London.
So he is not typical at all, so i know how he lives but I don't know how people poorer than the said person lives.
Although I painted a picture of "Royston Vasey" their are still large financial institution and high paid people out side London (A close friend is a MD of a Financial instituion outside London.)
I don't think how business is in London is different to similar companies anywhere else.
I just did not get how "the workers" lived as my snippet of the area is a very extreame example.
Your average poor Londoner is most probably as un-clued up on financial institutions as your average poor person anywhere in the UK.

Appreciate your distinction with the brokers/bankers
In these cases it's a big distinction, even though Times don't seem to understand it either.
The article say's "One desk head, James Bowditch, whose team traded sterling derivatives"
Traded ??
These are interbank brokers, they don't trade anything, they just put "counterparties" together, and try to nick a little bit for themselves  along the way, on top of the huge brokerage fees they charge.
Always has been the case.....usually the 'Brokers' earned more than the Traders !!!'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

The rest of it is all true though, the financial world still spins outside London. Just that London is a "must have" office for a multi national to be seen as serious.
Will that tradition still hold? who knows. But their is nothing special about London's financial hub status, it could easily just all be moved to say "Birmingham" or another country.
It only takes a reason to do so.
The SE is as misunderstood as much as the SE misunderstands the rest of the country.

I read that thread. There was no way on the planet I would have even contemplated commenting on it. It was like another universe. It reminded me of those threads where IM/purch/generali/kennyboy are wittering on about stuff leaving us in their wake, & we're 3 miles behind...:D
I agree that on reading it, it did little to dispell any notion that London is seen (by those inside & outside London) as being a seperate entity to the rest of the UK. That notion is historical IMO, & quite strongly held.
I'm kinda hoping that the olympics will be seen as a national games, rather than a city games in order to try to address this somewhat.
On London, I've only been twice. You can tell the non-Londoners - they're the ones not looking where they're going, marvelling at the architecture, open space etc etc. The Londoners are all the ones frowning, muttering about bloody tourists getting in their way & slowing them down, & ignoring the environment around them.;)
I really have been thinking this year that I should do a proper visit, as my 2 visits were meetings. I am aware there is so much there I need to see & experience.
My sole/main interest in London atm is all about Jack the Ripper.:eek:It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
