Help!! my cat has a HUGE lump on his head!!

I have just let my lovely cat in, and he is sitting on the stairs (his usual place) and my OH called me over to him and pointed out a massive lump right in the middle and front of his head.
It looks as if he has been smacked with a baseball bat or something, and it is 'scabby' to touch.
My OH has just tried to wipe it with some tissue and lots of puss has come out, do you think he has been fighting with another cat and has been scratched or could be something more sinister?

If it's gone pus-ey it must have happened a while ago - how long has be been out for?
If you seriously think he may have been hit, you need to ring your vet for advice - I'm thinking concussion type injuries. Best to be on the safe side. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
probs an abcess. maybe an infected rat bite . My cat had one in the same place as yours (this was years ago and xxx cats ago) when the vet shaved the top of her head you could clearly see two "teef" maarks.
its nasty and will most likely require antibiotics but I dont think Id be worrying too much.

I'm guessing abcess.
He's probably been fighting.
Vets first thing in the morning for jabs & tabs.0 -
P_S, don't worry.
Ted (RIP) was a scrapper & he had one once.0 -

He's in and out alot, the back doors are usually open for the dogs and he comes and goes and sits on the stairs, but now as it is getting colder we have shut the doors but let the dogs out the front for there business and he runs in and out.0 -
I was thinking it was an abscess as he had one on his cheek a while ago, but don't remember pus coming out.
Rat bite? He has brought a couple of dead mice to the garden lately so that is a possibility, at least i hope they were mice and they were dead:eek:0 -
Mine was off colour for a few days before we spotted the swelling..It must have been very painful, the pressure.
Its good that the puss is coming out. - perhaps you could bathe it tonight with a warm weak saline solution just to soothe it till you get to the vets in the morning?Norn Iron Club member 4730 -

AYe sounds like a large cat bite abscess. Very common and easily treated. May need sedated and lanced but it depends how open and draining it is0

I'll go and bathe it now, would warm salty water be ok do you think?0
