I would think that financially it would almost certainly be better to wait until his DLA claim is renewed (I'm guessing it won't be refused any way) and then get onto the motability scheme which includes insurance as well. The undoubtably high cost of insuring him for his own vehicle (if you can get it at an acceptable rate) would not be required in a few months any way. The years of Motability use can be carried over as a "no-claims" bonus to a private insurer at a later date as well. If he has been without a vehicle for some time already, would the wait be too unacceptable?
just to ask about the no claims, i'm reading some people are having problems getting normal insurance companies to accept any no claims, even with letter from mobility insurance company to get your no claims discounts..Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
What a shame that the OP hasn't been bothered to come back and read the advice that people have spent their time in giving!0

Excuse me I have been bothered and have taken the advice given, but unfortunately I have been on the phone a lot trying to sort this all out. Why judge before you know whats going on. I have managed to get him insured as of last night. I am paying a lot but thats the way it goes. I have been in touch with DLA and they say that to have his claimed looked at early as his condition has not changed just that he's passed his test they will not look at it again. It has to be a change in himself not that he just wants a motability car. I have thanked those who gave me good advice as well thank you, so why are you so quick to judge me, I have been so busy trying to sort this and now it's sorted I was coming on here to update.
I have also justed re looked through this thread and if you had looked properly you would have seen that I have been posting throughout and not just asked a question and disappeared. I really don't understand why this forum is getting so many comments to posters. This use to be such a friendly place but the more I read here now the more I see some members just posting to be unhelpful and even in some cases rude. Lets just hope it's not something that is going to last and it goes back to how it was before it's ruined by the odd few. Sorry if this post is not liked but I feel that I had to say something
Many thanks NickyThanks for any help and advice given

My guess is that many insurers just DON'T WANT to accept the disabled driver full stop, and this is simply an avoidance tactic.Note to Self: When posting, remember to keep within "forum rules" to avoid upsetting other "interested parties"0 -
Not sure if this will help but my partner got no claims on his insurance from my mobility car. It is a local company and they gave him 6 years no claims. If anyone wants the number just pm and I will give it too you. Thanks for any help and advice given

im sorry but i have to comment on this.
imagine being badly disabled, someone offers you a way to be more independant, you work hard to achieve what you need to to reach that goal and then someone else suggests as youv always been dependant on someone it doesnt matter if you cant have that independance for a while.
portland boy, does it still seem feasible to get him to wait awhile?
im also surprised people on a disability forum asking where the logic or benefit is in letting someone who is disabled to start driving a year earlier. surely its obvious.
nicky please pass my congrats to your son on passing his test! i wish him all the best.0 -

NO! That was the case many years ago. But it would be seen as discrimination now!0 -
NickyT...
I think it is actually possible for a sixteen year old to get a Motability vehicle and be the driver whilst still learning, although the vehicle cannot be used specifically for driver training. If he had turned sixteen whilst there was more than one year left on the DLA Motability award he could have got the vehicle then with you or your husband also named on the insurance policy.
If he was fifteen when there were just 12 months left of the award then you or your husband could have been a named driver (assuming that your own
I don't think there is anything you can do to seek early renewal of his award if his disability has not worsened, so what can be done now?
Well, maybe a mobility scooter or electric tricycle until such time as his DLA mobility component is renewed? Of course I don't know your son's disability but many scooters can be carried in a car boot and if your son is keen to 'spread his wings' then a scooter may be able to help him go 'walking' with friends. It seems you too are disabled, so the scooter may be helpful for you too!
Have you also looked at this?

Is it possible, given the fact you and you son are both disabled and you have a Motability car that your son could use your car? I know that Motability cars are only to be used for the benefit of the Motabilty customer but maybe there is some dispensation when there is another member of the family who also claims DLA Mobility component? Try calling Motability and asking them; their customer staff are really excellent! Also ask them if they can think of other alternatives - they are sure to have come across similar situations before!
You are probably already aware that there will be no extra payable for insurance if your son gets a Motability car but the excess is somewhat more than the standard £75 excess you probably have.
BTW I am also aware that Motability do help out some younger people with the cost of driving lessons. Did your son qualify for this?0 -
Morning,
Thank you very much (bored at home) for your comments, I was also surprised at some of the posts. But after reading through a few threads on here I can see there are some members that are just posting to either be rude or unhelpful. As for me if I could not help the op I would not post on that thread. I have also passed your congratulations onto my son thank you
.
Hi Paul Varjak,
To answer some of your points as best as I can lol.
My son is not allowed to drive my car as it is in a high insurance group so they could not add him to that. We completly understand that and see why they don't.
He is getting his renewal papers sorted out as soon as he's allowed to but as he did not have a year left we cannot get him a mobility car. So he got a little saxo 1.1 to keep him mobile until he gets his award renewed. I have managed to get him insured with Chartwell and he is now more independant and hopefully this will also help his confidenace.
Thank you both for taking the time to post and your helpThanks for any help and advice given

Yes, I find that out when it came to renewal earlier this year. My fiancee is coming to UK next year and I enquired about her driving the car. I was told that she could not use the car to learn to drive but she could use the car for my benefit. Also, that the insurance group of the car had to be 8 (or less) as she will be a learner driver. He is getting his renewal papers sorted out as soon as he's allowed to but as he did not have a year left we cannot get him a mobility car. I hope it does help his confidence. His insurance will be heavily loaded because of his age but his disability should have no effect on the premium.0
