Young disabled driver help

Hello,
My son who is 16 has just passed his test and I am looking to get him a car and his insurance. We can not get one on motability as his claim is due for renewal in the next month, so he only has 6 month remaining until it is reaccessed. You have to have a least a year remaining to get one from them. I am looking for any companies that do deals for young disabled drivers. He is going on to do his pass plus asap but does not have it at the moment.

Many thanks Nicky
Thanks for any help and advice given

Not in the case of a disabled driver or he would not have been able to have taken his lessons or test. Did you know anyone for insurance is that why you asked. Also just so other's know you have to be in receipt of HRM to qualify.

Try the CIS, they are good with young drivers, not sure about the disabled but its worth a try.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Sorry I don't know of any insurance companies. I just wasn't aware that anybody could pass driving test/take lessons before the age of 17 that's all.

Chartwells do disabled 16+ insurance but its expensive, could he not have an early DLA renewal, thats what the DWP advise in his situation.

He is going through his renewal at the mo, and have been told that it could take quite a while at the least 12 week but poss a lot longer than that. That is why until then I would like to get him a car so he is still mobile.
What I also find silly is that when ringing insurance companies and asking them all I keep being told that it is against the law for a 16 year old to drive. Surely insurance companies should be better informed as we have followed the law. And if I was trying to break the law would I really bother with insurance anyway.
Thanks for any help and advice given

  • With quotes of around £2000 for an 18 year old driver i dread to think what they would charge for a 16 year old.

Looking at the details on google, it seems that a 16year old may start to learn to drive if they have HRM. If you are not on HRM, you have to be 17.
Although everything that I have read says that the disabled driver still needs to be 17 to take the test.
It is done this way because some disabled drivers may need much longer to learn to drive and so gives everyone the fair chance of passing their test at 17.

OP, it might be that the test centre have made a mistake when reading his licence or the driving instructor but I would definitely get it checked out. If it IS a mistake, it could mean that the test he has taken is null and void.

Sorry I don't mean to be rude but if my son was NOT allowed to drive do you really think I would let him. I have been all through this and everything I have done IS by the law. Please help me by giving advice that is asked for and not just coming up with irrelevant comments. He has been through the DVLA and got his license legally, he IS entitled to his license. His driving school was BSM who also did everything by the law. His driving test was also legal and was a disabled driving test.

Sorry I am just getting a bit fed up with having to prove that we are NOT trying to break the law. If I was helping my son break the law I would send him out in an uninsured car, after all what would be the point in me paying a lot of money for his insurance for them to tell it was void.
Thanks for any help and advice given
