Is Halifax Bankers Draft Instant?

Hi everyone

Ive put a deposit on a car today and was hoping to pick it up tomorrow, and pay the remainder via Bankers Cheque from the Halifax.

Does anyone know if the Halifax will give me the cheque immediately or whether there is a wait ... Also, im wondering how much they will charge me.

Cheers

Their website says £10 for a Banker's Draft.

I can't see why they wouldn't give it to you immediately.

    They will charge £10.

I would ring first to check but I would think it is somethng they will do immediately on request.

I've gotten one recently from Bank of Scotland (same bank), they do it immediately over the counter in branch, takes about 5 minutes, and you don't need to inform in advance. Make sure you take in ID, as they sometimes request this if you are requesting a large amount.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

They should be able to issue it on demand. Take additional ID (eg driving licence / passport with you) and be prepared to answer security questions.

    £10 from a current account.

Free from a savings account, as long as it isn't a Web Saver or telephone only account.

Transferring the money from current account to savings account first will save you the tenner.

Why/how is it free from a savings account?

It doesn't say on their website.

Probably goes back to the building society days where a BS cheque was considered a standard method of withdrawal and "part of the service".

It states which of the banking products they charge for though. It doesn't explicitely state "no fee" on the savings pages, but there isn't a charge.

Although I'm sure Lloyds will want to "standardise" fees sooner or later. I believe the draft fee on current accounts is rising to £20 next month.

Hope you liked the money saving tip though ;) .

I'm going there today, so I'm going to ask anyway.

£20 is a bit pricey. I've heard that cheques are due to expire in the near future. I hope they don't, as I don't want to pay for a bankers draft. :o:p

Drafts are cheques, and when cheques disappear, drafts will go too.

Cheque clearing is unlikely to disappear before 2015 at the earliest. The cheque guarantee scheme will be discontinued in 2011, however.

Yeah it is £10 - reason they say is because they have already provided you with a cheque book (so might be free on accounts with no book?)

Also if it is made out to yourself it is free aswell
  • You only pay for a draft if it is requested from an account tha doesn't hold a cheque book facility. Otherwise the draft is an 'extra' on top of the service you have and so charged for.

Drafts are available whenever you want them too.
