My son goes to Beaver Scouts once a week and orchestra.

There is no way I'd encourage him to do any sort of martial arts (mainly as the main kids in his year who do it have a reputation for fighting and have problems with keeping their hands to themselves)

Why would you need to be teaching a 5 and a 7 year old to "defend themselves" anyway?!

Glad someone feels the same as me! I know they say that they're taught not to use their "skills" outside the class, but imo alot of them are too immature to understand that. Even when I was in school - a loooonnnnggg time ago - we were all !!!!!! scared of the kids who did martial arts!!

Anyway, DD is 6 and she does swimming twice a week, cheerleading twice a week and gymnastics twice a week, although one of the classes is "pay as you go", but the otherone is upfront for about 10 weeks worth of lessons, it's a bit more of an intensive class, although they're both in the same gym. The swimming is also pay up front for about 12 lessons (about £50). She's also doing maths games club in school for an hour on a Wednesday until half term. Her cheerleading class are going to be doing a "power tumbling" class for afew weeks soon which is on one of her (and my) free days which she really wants to do, so we'll see .

DS is a bit young yet to start doing stuff, but he's four on Boxing day so he can start going to the same gym that DD goes to in January because they can start classes at 4. I think he'll love it and loads of other boys go. I also don't want him doing rugby or football as I can't abide the parents who stand around bellowing at their children. Why do they feel the need to stay? I don't stay for cheerleading (not allowed) and although I stay for gymnastics because it's too far away to justify going home and coming back in an hour, we're not allowed to watch the children, they have a little cafe upstairs where we can sit and wait and have a drink. Suits me.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

DS1 9 years old does Cross country after school which is free and he will do football as well once he has improved his behaviour and this would also be free. He is crazy abouyt drums and he has a 30 minute lesson every week which i think works aout at about £2 a lesson.

DS2 4 years old just started primary school does football after school, dance and drama which was £20 or £30 for the termm i forget!

Both of them used to have swimming lessons but they are taking a break for the moment as we dont think they should have too many after school activities

mrcow and janepig - the bit about defendiing themselves is really for when they are older - not now! it can take years to work through the different stages, so i guess that is why we were looking at starting them in something now but keep up with it - if they wanted to of course.

really good variety and mix of activities that kids are doing! our school is small and doesnt really have much going on in terms of after school clubs - hopefully that will change as my kids get older.

Berniemaster, we also have sunday as a family day and i love it! we either chill and do stuff at home like movies and board games, or weather depending get out and about. its the kids favourite day of the week!

Then perhaps let them do it when they are older - rather than now when they are too young to fully understand the concept of self control and what is or isn't simply a game.

  • HI

My dd (5) goes to swimming lessons, gym club and rainbows. She would happily go to an activity every evening.
  • DS (just turned 7)

Mondays - Football club (connected to school) - Free
    Tuesday's - Beavers - approx 2.50 per week
Wednesday - Recorder club (connected to school) - Free

    DD (5)

Saturdays - Gymnastics (approx 4.50 per session)

    Will start Beavers in January

They both tried the Karate club run at school by a local firm but then when Beavers started it clashed so have been thinking about all 3 of us joining Blackbelt Leader's in town (as I would have quite liked to join in!) :)

    At school:
    Homework club - £1 a week
    Games club - free
    Netball - free

    Outside school:
    Brownies £2 per week
Playing with her friends - cycling, trampoling, climbing trees etc (I prefer her doing this to being in clubs personally- we did clubs last year but she has benefited in many ways from more free play this year imo)

    Hi there

This sounds interesting. I'd love my 12 year old to do something like this. He feels he's too old to learn new things (hah) so it's a battle to find something he won't feel to old to go to

I've sent you a PM Fletch. Forgot to send you a word of caution - I'm a Kupso mum who ended up joining in and getting hooked on it - don't say I didn't warn you - I realised that I had always wanted to do Judo when my friend did it when I was just a lassie, I used to go along and watch her class but we couldn't afford it, all this throwing people bigger than you to the ground, and crash landing on the floor without hurting yourself was always a mystery that remained unsolved for me until I joined.:rotfl:
