Look out for the once a month activities. There is not such a time commitment and these activities can often lead to new interests. Our two used to do :
Book club at the local library....free
Wildlife club - local countryside wardens...£1.50/session
    Sugarcraft - Sugargraft guild....£2/session

Both my children belonged to St John Ambulance, subs were only £1 a wk each and they learned some fantastic life skills, uniform provided free of charge, plus the older child took part at events.

My son now belongs to Boys Brigade, I pay £20 a term (sept - dec etc), they play lots of sports and compete with other B.B. units, my son loves it.

    Hope this helps

My dd is 10 and does swimming on a thursday at the local pool, £2-50 per session
she does swimming free through school on a tuesday, she also does art after school tonight from 4-5 also free..she is wanting to do a drama club after school which i keep forgetting to ring about so you have just reminded me £6 off the top of my head! also wanting to do netball whe the group starts up which i think she would be good at as pretty tall!
not expensive but keeps her active and main thing is she enjoys it all! she used to do brownies which was quite a lot and soon got bored so has left.

My DD does Kupso, it's a mixed martial art, and we pay per class attended, not by monthly direct debit (I hate classes that do that) She started when she was 8yo. Some kids do start younger, they have to be at least 5 to join.

It's only available in Scotland though. Very effective for self defence.

    Hi there

This sounds interesting. I'd love my 12 year old to do something like this. He feels he's too old to learn new things (hah) so it's a battle to find something he won't feel to old to go to

Fletch, at 12 years old your boy would be classed as a junior, so in with other teens and adults not in with the little kids, although he would be taught a relevant set of skills - they have to be over 16 before they are allowed to do stick work or weapons forms. There's a separate teen syllabus for 12 to 16 year olds.

They do self defence, throwing, locks, some pressure point work and also sparring, forms/pattern type work, so there's always something to be working on and learning something new. Our class gets to do flying kicks with a crash mat as a treat after gradings.:D

If you're in Scotland, send me a PM and I'll give you the website, I'm not sure it's fair to advertise it on here.;)

My older son really loved Beavers and it was quite reasonable. My youngest has selective mutism (amongst other things) so Beavers wasn't for him. :-(

They both do an hour of gymnastics per week which is £114 per term (thats for both, £57 each).

Apart from that, my older son is learning to play the piano (taught by my mum who, helpfully, is a piano teacher!) and the trumpet (taught by my brother). I am not sure how younger son will get on learning to read music. If its not possible, I'll just teach him the guitar myself.

Older son has put his name down for 5 skiiing sessions with his school. I can't believe how reasonable it is (£20 for the lot!!). He has also done after school choir and did "Mad Science" when a chap came in after school. That was quite pricey (I think £40 for 6 sessions) but he loved it.

Price wise, after school clubs seem good or local sports teams run by volunteers. And good old Beavers.

Oh yes, there is a private school nearby which got a grant to do up their swimming pool. As a condition of getting the grant, they have to open the pool to the public at certain times so we got a season ticket for there. Its ace!!! Its not well advertised at all so its rare that there is anyone else there at all when we go. :-) Its like having your own pool! We went 3 times a week in the summer holiday.

Big son also goes swimming free with the school.

My 11 year old - used to do Karate at £2 per session, it ran twice a week and they could go once or twice a week. He stopped that after his first couple of belts.

My 3 year old does Helen Ogrady drama (£6 a session!) and loves it, he's a real show off.

I'd like LO to have swimming lessons but the waiting ist is massive!

DD (6) does gym club 1 hr after school (connected to school)
Church group once a week - her choice, I am not religious.
Beavers (personally I think her group is rubbish and know they're not all like it, but DD likes this one)

DS (9) goes to cubs once a week. I really like cubs as it has given many different experiences within it, such as water sports, swimming gala, archery, camps as well as trips to the seaside and other places.

Hiya - I have two boys the same age. They both do swimming and the oldest has just started Beavers. He loves it. It has separated them as they have to be 6yrs to start. It's right up his street as he is not into sports, more into making/doing/learning which there is alot of at Beavers. Next week they are going bowling.

My youngest is into football and they both used to play on Weds but that group has been cancelled so am going to look into another team/football club. DS age 7 has also just started recorder club and violin.

They used to do gymnastics but I was getting fed up rushing from school all the time (and the expense) so knocked that one on the head.

I let them try experience different things in the holidays as a way of seeing what they might enjoy. They go to football club every holiday, a 'multi sports' club, trampolining, horse riding and this next half term they are doing a days drama workshop to see if either of them take an interest.

I'd like them to learn to ski but perhaps next year as we are going to lapland next winter.
