Yeah that's your best bet, whatever the problem it will wear on other parts of the car so is definatly worth telling them about just to save yourself agro.

Have a look on here for garage offers, most offer a free retest within 7 days - and it's normaly standard to have it free if they do the work for you.
To save myself hassle in the past I have taken it in and given them a budget to work with should anything need to doing (myself knowing that it needed work) then said to call me if it goes over - normally wins me a couple of free bulbs or a wiper blade!

Let's hope your emissions are ok - that can get expensive!

(If you can't afford a tyre at the moment it would be worth getting a handy young man to put the spare on for you and keep the original at home during the MOT. The car would fail the MOT if your spare isn't road legal, but if there is no spare then the car will pass. Do remember it is illegal to use the motorway without a spare wheel or some kind of puncture repair foam.)

as Bevan says,if the spare is ok put that on and leave the old one at home,as to re-test fee's check with the garage first and find one that does not charge,if you are anywhere near Canterbury I can point you in the right direction, and of course once it pases it gives you near on a 13mth mot

Ah okay thanks, i don't have a spare! There's a bloke up the road who works in the scrappy who asked if i need any tyres the other day as they've got loads.

Not sure how much to expect to pay for a used one though! I paid my garage a tenner for a legal tyre for my old Escort, but i didn't know if that's about right or they were just getting it out of their way!

    Not near Canterbury, i'm NE!

I've used the same garage for a while who've always been good to me (so far!) so ithey'll be my first port of call. One of the lads there spent a good while checking the Saxo over just after i'd bought it, to make sure all was well (for free- only cos the boss was off that day though!).

Feel like i've had my share of kindness from that garage with all the probs i had with the Escort, so i do worry that they will start trying to make some proper money out of me now

Oh noes, i just saw the first few posts in this thread, and people are saying the airbag light being on is a definite fail!!

I bought the car the day it came out of it's MOT and the airbag light flashes for about 5 mins then just stays on permanently. I didn't think it would fail on that, tell me it's not true!! :( (sobs)

get this changed asap how irresponsible

Lol. It's a bulge, it's barely even visible but if you squint it's there, hardly life threatening. I don't drive on motorways very often, if at all in recent months.

    Its not true :D

Really it isn't - the airbag system is not part of the MOT
... but you ought to get the fault rectified for your own safety.

Regarding the steering, could it be the power steering pump over pressurising. This will happen if you keep the steering on full lock.
