Oh, it does a daily scan Kwik and it's doing it now so I can't do the other stuff yet (don't want to upset it anymore than necessary!)

If this is a scheduled scan I'd recommend turning it off. It really isn't necessary. I don't have the program myself but I'd imagine it'd be something like Tools -> Options -> Schedule or something like that.

Let me know how you get on with the steps in Post 4...

I would suggest that you ditch your local techie expert who has given you such bad advice and, when you need to know something, get in touch with the techie's on this forum or one of the many other web sites that run techie forums.

Not only will you get advice but, if it turns out to be bad advice, the other experts will post in and tell you so before you implement it.

    I'm back!!!!

Thanks to all of you for your help and support - I really was worried.

Cleared my vault and then turned it off (aaarrrgghh!) and re-booted. It did the checky thing all on it's own - must have taken at least 5 minutes and felt like hours - but I'm back and no warning notices.

I haven't done the free-av thing David, but will look at it and I'll also look at getting rid of the daily scan thing.

But for tonight, tonight I rest!

Glad to hear it. I'd definately suggest ditching AVG and going for Avira. Hope the milking / hearding has gone well!
