    Hi esmf73
Our youngest is 6 and oldest is 13. I will tell the 13 year old when we know exactly what's going to happen but the youngest won't understand really. Thanks for the great tips. Am going to plan my meals for a week at a time and base it round what we have in the freezer cupboards etc. I do have a slow cooker so I can see that being used lots. How do I do a whole joint of beef in it cause I managed to pick up a reduced one tonight :T

Sorry McKneff I missed your input.
It states in his contract that he is not employed for the periods he is not working. He pays NI conts and tax for the times he is away but not the times he is home. So he is unemployed for the period of two weeks (or longer sometimes) whe he is at home. Therefore he doesn't qualify for redundancy as you have to have been employed for a perios of 2 years.

I still feel that there is something wrong here, could you ring someone up at ACAS, if that was the case, them saying employed, not employed, they would have to give him a p45 every two weeks, now if the just said we will pay you only for the time you are at work, then that would be fair enough, it would also mean he was employed full time but not being paid for not being there, and being eligible for rP, (i dont know if you have said how long he has worked for them) didnt have time to reread.
Do you see what i mean.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I do see what you mean. They would give him a P45 every 2 weeks if he asked for it. The company were not paying his stamp towards his retirement pension for the weeks he wasn't working so technically unemployed. This is common practice for people that work on the rigs (I used to work in the jobcentre so dealt with many who were just temporarily unemployed until they went offshore again). He has worked for them for 3 years which usually would mean at least a little redundancy :(

  • Consider eating vegetarian meals. My family love curried lentils and it is a good standby.

    1 large onion
    2 tablespoons veg oil
    3 teaspoons garam masala
    pinch chilli

Fry the chopped onion in the oil until brown, then add spices and fry another minute

    8 oz green lentils

Put in pan and cover with water to a depth of 1 cm. This may need topping up.

    Several large handfuls of spinach.

Throw in and stir. Season with salt at the end. I also add potato cubes or any other veg looking rather wrinkly in the bottom of the fridge. Serve with heaps of basmati rice.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the recipe Patchwork Quilt. Not sure that the youngest one would eat it but definately will try it for the rest of us, perhaps one night when she is at a friends for supper. I really love all the advice you all give and would just like to say thanks so much you really have made a difference to me today. Been panicking a bit about the situation but you have really helped so thank you
  • Have a look through this thread if you have time. There is a recipe index, but there are many low cost recipies not indexed. It's a good read too.

    Best of luck

So sorry to hear about your family predicament, Honey - and so damned close to Christmas as well :(.

Looks like you've already got loads of good advice already and can only agree with what's already been said.

Loads of great threads on here for lots of advice, but if you can't find something just ask :) - somebody will always be along in a few minutes to either answer your question or point you in the right direction.

Old Style is one of the friendliest boards on this site. I've been posting on here for just over 2 years - the depth of knowledge and willingness to assist anybody who asks for help still continues to amaze me.

Makes you wonder how many 'combined years of experience' we all share .

You can most likely cut back on things like heating/power use, if you think about it now rather than waiting for the coldest snaps.
Homemade Curtains at doors that dont shut tightly and home made rice bags to put in the beds before the kiddies get in(if you have a microwave),they act as hot water bottles but dont get freezing cold over night.
Slippers for everyone and a blanket, sleeping bag or duvet on the biggest chair for everyone to sit under when they are watching TV . A flask beside the kettle is handy to stop boiling the kettle each time you need hot water.
I have used mine for 12 years and it soon becomes second nature to check the flask before boiling more water, use it in the cooking too not just for drinks.
Going out for a walk is good if you get cold during the day because you come back internally warm anyway.
Kiddies may qualify for free school meals if you havent thought about that yet but otherwise packed lunch is much cheaper than paying school food prices.
