It may not be a virus at all, follow the first 4 steps in this excellent thread first of all to rule out any possibilities, shame you dont know the name of the problem thats arised.

Hello,
As well as virus protection, you also need anti-malware, if you have XP I would download Ewido it's a 2 week free trial but after 2 weeks you can still run but with some components disabled. If you havent got XP I'd try the free version of A2 squared although nothing like as good as ewido.
I hope this helps.0 -
Hi Alikat
I have got XP so will give that a try but how on earth do I get rid of this virus, it is saying it cant be cleaned!!!!0 -
I had the exactly the same yesterday,it was a spyware program (razerspyware) which popped up and took over my desktop wallpaper.AVG did put it in the vault but it came back, in the end i did a system restore and it hasnt again popped up.I think a site a went on and no it wasnt a naughty one lol! was infected.
I did check for some other viruses with avg and it found 27 altogether but most of them was sun java ones (as 3rd post) which im sure is part of the sun java program and not dodgy or anything.0 -
Am going through the steps on the link you gave me Quincy, the link that tells you to go into safe mode isnt working for me, can anyone tell me how to do it please, must go to bed now though will try again in the morning....Thanks folks x x0

To use the System Configuration Utility method
- Close all open programs.
- Click Start (bottom left of the screen), Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
- The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
- The computer restarts in Safe mode.
- Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer
