Firefox and Opera have a password manager built in.

There are also some really good programs like keepass.

Locknote is also quite good and I use it for a lot of stuff.
You download a single locknote and make as many copies as you like. They're basically just encrypted notepads that run by themselves without any installation.

This is the one I use to keep all passwords under one password.
Don`t forget your main password otherwise you`ll never ever get into it.

KeyPass as sra mentions is very good. And for added security I sometimes don't even store the password, but put a hint.

In your head. Create yourself a 'root' password' e.g. your mother maiden name and then embed the first X letters from any web site into the password in some order. That means every web site has a different password but you only need to remember the root. It is advisable to follow the guidelines though for password strength.

Simple example, mothers maiden name is smith

IBM site has password ... sImBiMth
    MSE could be ... sMmSiEth
    Microsoft could be ... sMmIiCtRhOSOFT
    etc. etc.

Play around with your own system .. why make things difficult for yourself.

The way I store my passwords is to create an excel spreadsheet, type in all sites, usernames, passwords etc then create a password for the spreadsheet so it can only be opened and modified with the password entered twice.

The only problem I have with doing it this way is that Im not sure if there's a way of somebody getting into the spreadsheet without my password (eg - hackers) I'd much rather have all passwords stored on my own PC as opposed to storing them in web-based password managers.

Does anyone know if this is a safe way of storing passwords? I suppose I could always keep the spreadsheet then zip it up with a password that's different from the one that opens excel? Then to be extra safe I could zip the winzip file in WinRar format and add a password to that too! :rotfl:

Taking the first letter from a phrase or memorable line is a good one, such as:
money saving expert is the best site on the net

    Giving you the password mseitbsotn

    So hence, in your head!

This is very loosely related. I am always extra conscious of I Banking safety. What are peoples' views on EMM or as someone recommended AccountUnity? How safe are they?

wisemonkeyuk, a Google for 'Excel password recovery' finds 4 million hits, so that tells you that it's not the most secure place to store sensitive information.

You're better off using one of the password managers with strong encryption as mentioned above. When I was looking for a password manager I decided on KeyNote. I like the fact that it is completely free-format without the limited fields which other password managers have.

I Find (PINs) to be the best as I can carry it with me on any portable drive or flash drive.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
