But recorded at least would prove to him that the cash has either arrived or hasn't arrived. (So he would know whether the PO had lost it or I was trying a fast one and claiming it never arrived.)

I must admit, it seems that all the practices I have seen on E-Bay, and now use, appear not to be the best ones. I have only put certain terms on my sales that the "big boys" use. I think I will take more care in future!!

It's good to see you're taking the advice on board. I'm certain these are not the responses you expected when you first posted the topic but there are a few things to remember, just to clarify:

Always allow at least 7 days for payment. After this time has passed contact the buyer in a polite manner to ask where the payment is and if a response is not received then start a NPB.

Always send expensive items via Special Delivery or another traceable fully insured service. Recorded delivery is not much use as Royal Mail don't even update when the package has arrived (in my experience).

Always advise the buyer to send any cash payments using a fully insured delivery service, such as Special Delivery.

Finally, don't get too stressed out if a buyer doesn't respond immediately to your e-mails. Some people go on the internet every few days and it may take them this amount of time to reply, so just relax until they do!

Please also remember that sellers cannot ask for cash anymore. They can however accept it if the buyer offers to send it (which seems odd), so if you actually offer cash as an option in your listing remove that too.

I'm not saying you're not going to have problems with this transaction - there is no way as a buyer I would send cash, so although I may be cynical, I suspect that this money will never arrive. Simply, I think you may have put the buyer's back up, and possibly (just possibly) precipitated this problem. On the other hand, people who say they'll send a cheque, no cash are probably already on the dodgy side.

actually you CAN offer cash in your listings -aslong as you offer your buyers other alternatives as you cannot insist that buyers pay with cash

Thanks for all the comments and advice.

I never asked for cash, cheques I don't mind and put them as an acceptable form of payment. (gets rid of those huge Paypal fees.)

But this guy just seems to be stringing me along. I said earlier, you have a gut feeling that somethign isn't right with some people. He was one of them. Said he'd make cheque payment within 24 hours, then nothing. Then payment was supposedly sent before Thurs, then it was cash payment. Come Sat still nothing.

This has got neg feedback for me all over it!

I'd also like to add about offering different postage methods. ie SD or 1st class. If the item is worth more than £32 and the buyer has choosen 1st Class instead of special delivery and the item doesn't arrive YOU are responsible for it. The buyer is intitled to a FULL refund. SD is only there to protect the seller!

I always offer sellers standard postage. If the item goes over £32 i send the item out SD or Airsure if the item does not reach £32 i send the item out with a Proof of postage which covers ME in all ways. If it costs a little extra to send i recieved more than expected for the item so i take the cost. Please understand that postage methods are never the responsibility of the buyer. The seller is fully responsible in getting the item to the buyer.

Also if you were unable to put an Auction up following Ebays terms with the 7 days payment or did not understand the rules governing auctions in regards to ebay maybe you should either brush up on your knowledge of Ebay or choose another method to sell.

Thanks for that gem! It's "advice" like that that people can do without

If anyone has actually got a link to this "7 day rule" can they please post it? As all I know of is that you can't post a NPB until 7 days are up and this "Important: You should contact the buyer directly if you have not heard from them, or if the buyer has not completed Checkout within 3 days of your listing's end ", but being a mere mortal I must admit I may have missed the exact clause in the T and C's. ;)

there isn't a link that needs posting - you can't insist on payment within 1,2,3,4,5, or 6 days because there is absolutely nothing you as a seller can do, until 7 days are up

zak I know I go a lot on gut feeling so if you feel he is stringing you along wait for Monday post then start NPB dispute.

To be honest nowadays I expect payment fairly immediately, I send an invoice after 24 hours or so if they haven't paid followed by a reminder at day 3-5 and assuming no contact..I just start NPB...and again assuming no contact I hit them with a negative as soon as I win NPB.

In the past I used to chase them by email...call them etc but as you say when they start all this carry on just follow the rules and don't get too stressed by it. I understand you need the money but no amount of chasing will sort out someone is ducking payment.

    Good luck.
