Isn't there legislation to stop people melting down Sovereigns? As for the difference, a full sovereign is over 2cm wide.
  • Gold price in Sterling:

This forum won't let me post a link because I'm a new member, so type:

    "goldprice uk"

into google. It should be the top link.

Sovereigns are technically legal tender so there probably are laws against melting them down but I can't see a reason why you'd do it...

They are a convenient size, they are guaranteed 22 carat gold by the Royal Mint and they are easily recognisable. That means they are highly liquid and you don't have to pay assay costs to determine purity when you sell. In fact, sovereigns are so well recognised that fighter pilots from all sorts of countries are given some in case they crash land overseas.

With regard to the ingot question...

I would leave them as jewelry. There isn't any advantage I can see to melting them down and it also means you can sell them indivdually if you please.

i'd avoid postal-gold. i was offered £60 for 39grams of 9ct, then when i refused i was offered £120. i cant believe they doubled the offer just like that. anyway, i declined that and have been quoted a decent price from howcashforgold.co.uk
i'd advise anyone to use a company that will offer a quote before you send the gold, any company not doing so is obviously just hoping to take you for a mug

I too am waiting for M4G to return my jewellery (if it hasn't already been destroyed) after I sent back the cheque they sent me for less than half what I had previously had the jewellery valued at. They don't reply to emails and fail to honour their quarantee that states "find a higher price and we'll double it!".

I tried www-jewelleryscrap-co-uk (can't post link) first which give excellent customer service and a much better valuation than M4G. Wish I'd stuck with them now.
Report Money4gold to consumer direct, you can use the online form or phone them. I have read a few reports of people still waiting a month later to get back their property, seems to be a popular tactic with this company, they receive the cheque back and still have your gold. Consumer direct will give you a template letter to use and will report them to trading standards if you can provide Money4Gold's details.
  • Hello everyone i just saw this thread and thought i would add my bit ,...i found that the best prices for gold are paid by dealers on the carboots they pay the days rate( which you can also check by ringing pressmans in London) as for online or tv adds i found they pay the worst followed by jewellers and the new "We buy Gold " shops i have phoned most of the tv add companies and they pay silly low prices and the ones that didnt tell me a gramm price i ordered an envelope and sent a very small amount in just to find out !! result was that they paid £2.36 a gramm for 9 ct gold when the days price was 7.63 per gramm for 9 ct so be carefull and just because "its on TV" or "its a shop" so it must be good,... its rubbish and a rip off!!!... i feel sorry for the pensioners and ppl with little funds especially. Sooo sort your gold in the different carats ie:-9/10/14/18/21/22 and fein gold 999.99 weigh it seperatly and each has its own value watch it beeing weighed and that the scales are on zero after each weighing best is too remove any stones yourself as they do not really weigh much but dealers tend to take too much off for them.Cooksonsgold is a good place to google if you need a benchmark it isnt the top price but close enough as they also have costs like refing and assay as do the dealers at carboots and antique fairs who also have fuel costs to get the gold to the refiners . All in all i found them the best, this is my experience and i hope this helps people to get their true value.
  • Just thought i would mention the Gold is Gold whether its broken or not so dont be fooled , it is a precious metal and worth the same , sometimes a dealer will give a little more per gramm if a piece is in good condition and re-sellable and it is better if it has hallmarks from an assay office. Beware 9K stamps were beeing sold on E-... and some devious people hang real gold clasps on pinchbeck or gold plate or join chains up if you do also buy gold privatly beware of people paying you in fake notes also at the moment thier is a lot of fake 14 ct gold about
  • Money4gold ..paid £2.36 a gramm for 9carat that is disgusting especially when we are all in a crunch with money
  • Almost all of the posts on this thread only have a hand full of post, this makes my think.
    Total debt Feb 2012 = £54354.11 😳
😁Debt Free and you can do it too
  • Just checked online now and the prices on How Cash for Gold site slightly better than Hatton Garden metals. Both have similar/good feedback so going with the HCFG site
