How to have defaults removed from credit report

  • Hi

Does any default on your credit rating automatically come off or do I have to inform the creditors to remove it?

I'm trying to improve my credit rating as I've had debt in the past. I've applied for a credit card which will hopefully help build my credit score back up again. Are there any other options to getting better credit??

Yes it automatically comes off 6 years after it was placed on your file. The only other way to get it off is if the default was incorrectly placed in the first place - settling the debt will mark it as a settled default and WILL improve your chances of getting other credit...

It's perfectly legal to keep the default on the account - but it should be marked as settled.

Is it.....? I didn't think it had actually been proved in court....I still think its worth a try...

You can try to do a deal with them to remove the default, but legally if you did at one point default then the record of that can stay for 6 years.

If they won't do a deal then it stays.

See: Technical Guidance Note - Filing defaults with credit reference agencies

But if you feel it was given unfairly, then you can complain to the ICO.

Not that I ever want to get credit again, but my credit file is such bad reading....I want to be proud of it..
