How to have defaults removed from credit report

Hi

I have previously been in debt with a few compaies. I thought I had settled all however I have just browsed my credit file for the first time and there appears to be two defaulted on there. One with a balance of £81 and one with a balance of £165.

Is there anything I can do to have these totally removed from my credit file? I can pay them off without a problem immediately but I am unsure if this will removed them from my file?

Can anyone offer any advice as Im keen to get my file back in good shape

    Hi Chrissy

Just paying off the debt with the default will not remove it from your report. They will automtically drop off after 6years.

You can sometimes negotiate with the creditor who put them on saying you wil pay the balance if they remove the default.

Or you could possibly get them removed if you can prove the creditor didn't send you a correct default notice (if they sent it to an old address and you hadn't told them you had moved this wouldn't count.)

  • Thanks

Am i best to write to these companies and request them be removed or should I call them and speak to someone direct. The strange thing is one was set up on a d/d to run to completion and I thougth it had and have never cancelled the d/d however it is still showing the balance as one months payment.

I find it quite stange to be fair. Surely paying off the owed amounts is still better for my credit file than the defaults showing?

Best of luck with that-I am battling a DCA for removal of a default on my file, even though it was paid in full, the moment we heard of it, and after the DCA PROMISED there would be no default recorded!....

  • Im sure it will be fun i'm sure.

I think my best option is to conatct them to have them totally removed and if they are not willing just to pay them the amounts owing, Its only £246 in total which I am pleased about from my original 15k debt
  • Contacted welcome finance with respect to the £81 balance on my account, they advised me I owe nothing and my account is closed and settled. Have spoken to equifax whom I got my report from and they advised me to raise a dispute which they will take up with welcome finance so hopefully something will be sorted from this one.

Now time to move onto the next one.
  • second one "HFO Services Ltd" also confirmed it is closed and paid and are conatctig the credit reference agencies. Things are looking up!!

was much less painful than I imagined howver theyy still arent removed as yet

Read this...its not much use but there was some thinking a while back that once a default was satisfied or payments brought up to date that it was illegal or there was no just reason to keep a default notice on your credit file, as you were no longer in default. I haven't got time to do the research on it at the moment cos I am dashing out but try googling....its worth a shot.

It's perfectly legal to keep the default on the account - but it should be marked as settled.
