Typical of my impatience :o after posting about the cheeze grater idea I just tried it on a few as they are.... it works brilliantly, just pricks through the skins nicely without any squishing, so no need to freeze 'em tonight :T

Going to head off in the morning and get the cheapy booze :D hope I bump into some of the more 'straight lace' members of the village in the supermarket as I'm there with half a dozen bottles of vodka and a couple of bottles of gin :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

looks like there's going to be some winter warmth somewhere about christmas :j

My OH soaks off the labels and makes up a nice new one, with our house on it and the date.

Mind you, I normally keep a couple of bottles with the old cheapy label, then anyone who I think is a bit undeserving of my hard work, home made infusions, gets offered some from this. I am usually correct and they don't want any :D
Just the same, I tell those people when they come round and admire my tomatoes that I fertilise them with my own pee, that usually stops them asking for a taste.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • Can anyone enlighten me on the cheapest prices of gin please?

I've checked Teco and Asda price checker, they both have Own Label Dry London gin @ £8.18 and O/L Imperial Vodka @ £7.98, they're the handiest for me (although thats 10 miles south to Tesco or 12 miles north to Asda) village post office/shop don't do bhooze ;)

Possibly Aldi or Lidle might do cheaper, but it's a three day camel ride for me out in the sticks here to either of them ... and I want to make it in the morning :o how am I going to wait 2 or 3 months before it's ready
  • The best thing is that sloe gin matures the longer you leave it (after you have removed the fruit). Stumbled across a bottle in the cupboard from 1998, and that was almost syrupy and smooth, buddy beautiful.

Thanks for doing the price checker for me.

Well that was a very satisfactory mornings work, the sloes were washed and rolled around with the cheeze grater to p-rick the skins, it worked a treat :rotfl: now have 3 bottles of sloe vodka 3 of sloe gin 3 of bramble vodka  all I need now is some patience ;)

Thanks all for tips and encouragement :T

Is it all just as simple as that?

    Buy cheap gin
Wash and pierce all your fruit
Immerse Fruit in your liquer for a few months then distil back into nice bottles!

    Whoops, forpot the sugar!
Would you ask the wolves to look after the sheep?

I still freeze my sloe cause it apparently breaks them down more so releases more juice. No idea if its true though. Wish I read the cheese grater idea before I spent hours pricking them last night. although 3bottle and 2 jars of pure yummyness its all worth while. Cheapest Gin I found was Sainsurys own £7.48.

My OH insisted we used Bombay Saffire - I kid ye not! It's not done enough for 2 litres so I'll be topping it up with the cheapest gin I can find!

Went and gave all the bottles a shake this morning :D

the last bottle I did I was a bit heavy handed with the cheeze grater, deliberately rolled the grater round on them with more pressure to split the skins rather than just puncture them. Theres no difference in colour between the 'heavier' split ones than the gently pierced ones, both are colouring nicely already :j
