    Man lands on moon !

The report is dated July 2008

Hat's off to Uswitch for getting almost every media outlet to run this 15 month old story again. Can they go for the hat-trick next April ?

A special mention for the Daily Mail which ran this story on 15/07/2008 by Sean Poulter

and runs the identical story today by Laura Clark

    Not surprising this news.

The quality of life in this country would improve immeasurably if the government took concrete steps to move some of its departments out of London and the South East.

The South East is just too overcrowded and this places incredible strain on infrastructure and public services. For me personally this is one of the biggest contributing factors to the low standard of living.

Of course I haven't mentioned some of the truly fantastic bits of Britain - a beautiful country with stunning beaches and lots of outdoor activities, which incredibly few people seem to be interested in.

the country spends below the European average, as a percentage of GDP, on health, and education.

    Thats the thinh about averages.

Britain spends more on Education than Spain, Germany, Holland, Italy and Ireland but is below this crude "average" because Sweden and Denmank spend 30% more than average.

Unleaded fuel is now cheaper than Belgium, Germany, France, Holland and Italy.

However I doubt if this makes us have a better quality of life.

I wonder where they got this figure from? Average income can be highly skewed because of few million-pound-bonus fat bankers. We should concentrate more on median incomes, which is much much less than £35k/year.

Newspaper journalists do not have very high IQ nowadays anyway :)

  • When I hear that people are paying 4 euros for a half pint of Magners in Spain I really think that we are doing okay. I have also heard of coffees at 5 Euros in France! In saying that maybe that is when people are going out. Not sure what it is like for the bags of groceries! I have also heart that Ireland is extortionate!

But we do have the best quality whingers, whiners, doom mongerers and narrow minded bigots

Whingers and whiners yes, but I've seen some narow minded bigots to rival ours all over the place.

Quality of life is diffeent in different places: better in some ways, worse in others. Whats better will come down to an individual: not a list.

OTOH, wouldn't mind a few more public holidays a year.

This list is kinda funny, don't you think?

I'm not sure why living in Ireland is better than living in the UK though...

It's just a rubbish list. The methodology is all wrong.

They give points for earnings once and most of the other categories are prices. So spending is counted lots of times. And completely ignore income tax!

It's like awarding a football match to a team that's lost 2-1 but had more throw-ins.

By "not surprising" I hope you mean "completely wrong"? Otherwise you come across as a baseless whiner.

Quite. In the last year or so I've been to Marloes, Tenby, Laugharne, Llanwddyn, Lyme Regis, Bridport, Whitstable, Betws-y-coed, the Peaks, Loch Lomond, Loch Fyne, Marcham, Brighton, Bantham, Rutland and Pluckley for the beaches, outdoor activities and food.

There are loads of things that get under my skin about the UK, but loads of things I couldn't live without.
