  • Why a cheque? What about...

    Online banking
    Telephone banking
Register with Virgin's online service and use your debit card
Ring them up and pay by debit card

or even use the BGC tear-off slip on the statement at your bank branch counter.

There's really no need to send cheques through the post, and risk them going astray, in this day and age!

Mayve not, but my account doesnt have online or telephone facility and I wont use my debit card online for bank stuff, I refuse to pay a fortune to call customer services, and my bank wont accept payments with a slip without setting up a regular bill payment. The joys of living in a small town! So it is cheaper for me to send a cheque and let them pay for postage at the destination!!!

Gotcha! :) MBNA have freephone customer service numbers.

You're now going to tell me you don't have a landline and 0800 numbers aren't part of your mobile package aren't you? ;)

You don't put a stamp on the envelope? Or are they sending you reply paid envelopes?

Please tell me it's a free post envelope? If not i find that unbeliebable. As mush as you dont want to pay by cheque, virgin dont want you to pay by chequee either. They give you all these other electronic options which you refuse to use, and then make them pay (the postage AND the fine) because you wont spend a few pence on a stamp!?

One thing to note with the Virgin CC, if you are using it for balance transfers, the maximum direct debit they will set is £25 or whatever the % is for the minimum payment. I didn't know this before I took the card and they told me over the phone as I wanted to set my payment higher. The reason? Incase I made purchases which took the minimum payment over the amount I wanted to pay so instead of making one payment each month, to pay any more I have to send a cheque off. Not exactly handy.

DD is either the minimum payment or the full balance. I am yet to see credit card company - or any company that offers anything else for VARIABLE DDs.

There are also fixed DDs (like for you council tax), but that is not much use to c/card companies.

You could of course set up Standing order, which is something completely different then DD and completely in your control. However you would be putting yourself at risk if c/card company (Barclaycard does it on regular basis) changes statement & due date.

But I don't understand how are you exactly thinking this works? Or it should work according to you? "Sir, I would like to pay minimum payment but IF I make a purchase and you receive a signal from my brain to your brain telling you that I would like to pay it I would also like you to go and manualy adjust it for this amount as well??"

It is automised (sp?) system, that is why it is so cheap for the companies to run.
