Hello, itsbeef - I have that name etched in my memory, and your picture!

who diagnosed the hard disk, what did they do, do you have any other symptoms apart from disconnection problem. When you say hard drive, do you mean the base unit of a PC, or the disk drive inside. Are you protected against viruses etc.., patched with windowsupdate.

have you backed up any important data?

    Thanks guys......

    In response:

The laptop was sent to our IT department and checked over.

The initial problems was that the machine starting slowing up bigtime and got to the point where it literally stopped and a bright blue screen came up stating something about "memory dump"

It would then reboot itself time and time again.

I have taken everything off it that i need and it has been reformatted.

The issue of not holding onto a connection is still there thought and when I press the "on" button when booting up I am requested to "PressF1" to start in some mode?

Im away today guys but will get back to you all asap.....

    Many thanks for your time

When you reformatted, did you put XP service pack 2 on, and enable automatic windows updates. Do you have upto data virus scanner installed etc..?

Is this wireless? laptop? usb modem?

It could be talk talk, rather than the PC..

possibly but housemates pc working fine.

Is there a way of running a test of the hard-drive to see if anything is failing?

I'm struggling to see the link between a hard disk failing, and broadband connection dropping. If your hard disk was physically dying, then the PC would crash, you would get hard disk errors constantly, or it wouldn't boot up in the first place. If you find out what model of HD it is, then the manufacturer usually produces a free diagnostic tool called a hard drive fitness test or similar, or you could run chkdsk c: /R to check for logical corruption.

    What is the "PressF1" message?

    Hi,
I had a similar problem, it turned out that I had Dialerwatcher installed which booted me as it thought I was having my dial codes interfered with.
