Am I being taken for a ride?

Carpet Right measured my lounge, stairs & landing for a £6.99 sq m carpet. Quoted £290 plus £79 fitting. We measured it and calculated 34sq metres. This should cost £240 app. When i queried it, I was told ( by the guy who came to measure) that the £290 included a £50 "stair" charge, because it takes longer to lay carpet on the stairs. When I pointed out that this £50 should be paid to the fitters & not the shop, he said, no, it is a charge by the shop. He said Allied carpets charge £75. Now, I'm not a carpet salesperson, or fitter, but I feel I'm being spun a tale here. especially when he saw that I was sceptical, he offered to knock 10% off the whole price. Is he correct? if I just have them to supply the carpet, I would have to arrange pick up and thats not easy or cheap, but I hate to be taken for a fool.

All you can do is get another quote elsewhere, they all sell exactly the same carpets at roughly the same prices, just some of them are sold under different names, but it's all made in the same factory.
It doesn't make any difference to you if you pay the shop or pay the fitter and £50 to fit a carpet for the stairs doesn't seem to bad. You could just call a couple of shops like allied and ask them if they charge £75 for stairs.
I was thinking of going in there myself today so I'll ask.0 -
I don't know the answer, but are you able to take advantage of this:

Heath Robinson. I went into Allied today, they dont impose a "stairs" charge, but they do charge more for fitting. We have decided to have CarpetRight, but my OH made it clear to them that he did not believe this explanation. He told them they should display it clearly in the shop and on the invoice. They did non of these. Incidentally, it isn't actually for fitting the carpet, it was hidden in the price for the actual carpet. we pay the fitter seperately. Still think its dodgy.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

It is normal to pay CarpetRights fitters seperately, and they charge quite a fair price ,although every peice of furniture has to be out of the room or there is a few grumbles, I've bought from them on quite a few occasions (CarpetRight) and never had any problems, personaly I would rather pay the fitter at least you are dealing with one person directly should any problems arise.I used to be confused, now I just don't understand

Whenever I've had carpets fitted I've always paid more for stair fitting & have been told this up front. In the past I always bought my carpets from Allders & even when they offered free fitting, this never included stairs.
It is a very strange way for Carpetright to price structure, but if you are now going to get 10% off for querying this then you've done a good deal.:T
It is possible the company agree with the fitters a standard rate for the work they do, but extras such as stair fitting go into their coffers. You can always query with head office if what they are doing is legit. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

I thought Carpet Right provided free fitting if you buy underlay as well?
I'd try http://www.carpets-direct.co.uk/ they guarantee to be the cheapest and offer free fitting on all purchases as well as getting hold of any make/brand/type of carpet you've seen elsewhere.

i have 4 rooms carpeted by carpet right during the past 6 months..... trick i have learned are
1) let them quote for the carpet...... if stairs, get them to call round
2) collect the carpet yourself (carpet right charge £25 for the fitters to bring it with them...)
3) buy your own gripper rods from BnQ or Homebase etc. (pack of rods cost £8 for 6 approx, which is a least a 3rd of their cost)
4) buy your own underlay from BnQ or Homebase etc. (different levels, but still cheaper by 20%)
5) buy your own door bars from BnQ or Homebase etc (at least a 3rd of the price quoted
stair carpet cutting always incurs a separate cost, if the salesman is decent he will break the cost down, if he doesnt ask........smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

A while since I've bought carpet but don't you have to pay for the bits that get cut off? So even though your room is 34 sq m you may have to buy 40 sq m because its all standard width and a certain amount is wasted? But if the salesman can't explain that to you...0
