If you are that close to the breadline why have you got a telephone line?
It's not essential you can live without one.
You and no one else are responsible for your own finances.

I don't see how it is.

You said that people would be in uproar if BT added (£38) to the bill if they did not pay on time.

I merely pointed you to the BT Customer Help centre which shows that a Late Payment Fee (of unspecified value) will be added to the bill if payment is received late.

Please explain why you feel it is a red herring.

we were taking of the old days , its evident banks have lead a penalty culture as it never happened until we became accustomed to disproportionate bank charges.

    Still don't get your point.
    What is it?

In your BT example, which penalty would you prefer?

    a) £7.50 extra next month; or
    b) Phone cut off, and BT refusing to deal with you until you lodge a £100 deposit with them?

In the Bank example, which would you prefer?

    a) A fee of £38 or whatever; or
    b) A letter thanking you for your business, and 30 days to find another bank?

my point is wages are or should be regarded as your own , not some pot that the bank can abuse at will - unfortunately the original thread has been distorted by digressions into money mismangement, which it has to be said is rife in todays society ( and i certainly don't hold with that ) , but primerally i would like a sort of truck act to safeguard people and especially poorer people from greedy banks pushing them further into debt by extortionate charges - its not unreasonable , even if some shortsighted people dislike the idea.

I really can't see why a extortionate bank charge of say £38 applied to the bank account of someone who may earn as little has £120 net per week does'nt appear wrong to you -are you really that detached or uncaring ?

Whether the person earns £0 or £5000 a week is not relevant.
The charge, at whatever level it may be, is known before the event and the individual has the choice of arranging their finances so as to avoid incurring the fee.
And to save you asking me. I am that detached.

Are you saying that even if you have already spent some of your wages by signing up to a DD before you get paid, the bank should not take said DD unless you let them?

Whether you are rich or poor it's sensible to have an account for bills which has an amount going in before the bills are due.

Ok so you don't care what the charge is or how poor someone is or i presume their circumstances -i truly hope your life stays that cosy and you never have to face some of the financial problems less fortunate people do.
