Club Penguin

Hello, can anyone give me an idea on what Club Penguin is all about, is it safe for a child to use, worth the money, okay for a 6 year old, etc, etc? Yes or no basically!

I have had a look on the website but doesn't give too much away.

Thanks.

  • I have 6-year-old twin girls and they both love Club Penguin - it's a sort of virtual world, where you 'become' a penguin, can play games, go shopping, visit friends etc and accumulate points to 'buy' things with. It's harmless fun as far as I can see. Mine aren't members, you don't have to be, but being a member means you have extra options.

My 10 year old little sister uses Club Penguin, she loves it! I've been on it myself. Its definatly harmless fun. Its like a virtual penguin world you can become friends with other penguins and play games etc. I think you can register for free but to get extra things you have to be a member which costs i think. I would say its fine for a six year old :)

  • Hi, my 12 year old son says YES! He used to be a member and he loved it. He says there's restricted talk where you get to "chat" using predetermined phrases (hello, goodbye, etc) but there's also a bit where you can chat freely so you might want to restrict that.

My boy loved being a penguin and as our computer is in the sitting room I was able to keep an eye. Don't let your little one anywhere near Habbo though, it's a cesspit. I got my son off that quick sharp

    Hi,

My DD has been a member for a couple of years & I would say that it's fine for a 6 year old. It will encourage reading, pc skills, problem solving & social skills, the safe chat mode is a good idea but I believe it's monitored & anyone being abusive is then banned. Mine sometimes meets school friends on there too which keeps the phone line free ;)

Hi ...my son now ten has been a member for quite a few years now...we have even bought some soft toys from the Disney shop online...he bought the DS game when it came out and although it was ok it was not as good, according to my son, it wasn't as good due to the fact that it is all about interacting, it is worth the money per month it is fun and they bring out new things every week. There are also quite a few cheats knocking about online to get extra things .

When my sister used to use Habbo ( not the ten year old an older one!) she used to find some of the people who went on it were very nasty. She used to get people sending her horrible messgages, even though they block swear words you could obviously make out what they were saying. This was a few years ago though so don't know if it has changed now but from what i saw i don't think i'd want my child on it (obviously if he was old enough!) x

Soon after my son got to join (the pressure of a then 10 year old whose pals got to join :o) I decided to check up on it to see if there were any bad vibes and I certainly got some. Apparently it was frequented by groomers in its past so I pulled the plug on it, to be safe.

It's a site for teenagers and there's open chat which didn't sit well with me. Also, my son, being a niaive sort, gave his details to someone who stole all his money from his account. It was a disgrace and I got zero help from the site.

If your child's usage is monitored by you, and they're not as unworldly as my boy I'm sure you'll be fine. My DS was just a wee bit too trusting

That happened to my son on club penguin, assumming your talking about 'virtual money' (or points). My daughter revealed the password to someone. We changed the password and it did teach the kids a lesson in keeping them secret.

Other than that, no problems with club penguin my 9yo and 6yo love it.
