Choice of 4 x4 - probably daft question

It's not very economical either, as for being green, don't make me laugh.
Rallydrivers don't usually drive child friendly green cars either, so what do you drive Rallydriver?
ML.
Make you laugh? You and jeannieblue are the ones making me laugh. The key to good driving is observation. Where, if you care to review my posts in this thread, did I ever raise an objection to 4x4s on environmental grounds?
My car isn't environmentally friendly at all but is at home in amateur rallies.
4x4s no matter how good you think they are, are never as good on tarmac as a car. I've followed RR sports, Cayennes and X5s round the lanes here and I can tell they don't take changes in the road as well as even a sporty version of a regular family hatch. You just can't get away from the simple physics of all that extra weight and higher centre of gravity.0 -

Oh really...
I beg to differ - alot actually. I'd rather tow a horse box or a caravan with a nice good gas guzzling 4x4 than say, an EVO or a Scooby.. but if you know different, please let us have the facts.
Re the school run - I stand by what I said before, I find it a nightmare to get through all the large cars that are dropping off their darlings... And you just know that most of them are within easy walking distance! But that is no reason to 'slag' off 4x4 owners. It is too easy to categorize people. And we all do it.Genie

I don't support 4x4's, I have no choice but to drive whatever my husband chooses as a company car, my personal car is a mini cooper (and a lovely mint classic mini), and if I can change his mind on his next car I will. But I loved the range rover and hate the lexus.
My support was for the original OP and her decision to spend her hard earned cash on the car of her choice.

ML - how can you not support 4x4's and in the same sentence say that you loved your Range Rover?? I understand your dislike of the Lexus... should've got the 'unhybrid' one!! :rotfl: They are rather nice. But I would still choose the Land Cruiser over them. Like driving an armchair.
You have good taste - the Mini sounds great!Genie

I don't know why you keep putting up arguments against points that I haven't even made?
Of course if I had something heavy to tow that required a 4x4, I'd use a 4x4. That wouldn't be in doubt. Towing with "an EVO or a Scooby" would be silly, they are only smallish cars.
In normal driving though, unless you pay a hell of a lot, 4x4s make the Austin Maxi look like a dynamic chassis. Even when you pay, I've followed a Cayenne and numerous X5s round the lanes, the weight of them shows when taking dips, crests, reversing cambers etc.Things which say a Focus ST170 wouldn't be troubled by.
I also don't get why you feel so threatened by points being made on an internet forum. Its not like I'll persuade anyone out of a 4x4 from here, the only thing that can do that is government legislation and they'll hardly be looking on here for inspiration.
Its also a site about money saving, so posts pointing out how someone can save money when they don't actually need a 4x4 are entirely relevant.
The OP had already announced her decision of what she was going to do by the time the thread topic deviated.0 -

He chose the hybrid because of the cheap company car tax (he's not green at all).
The thread has got muddled because some people are failing to realise the original op wanted a tow car for a large caravan.

I support the right for any one to choose what they prefer, hence the 4x4's my husband keeps choosing as a company car. The RR drove great, the Lexus yuk!

I know - and I've upset Rallydriver which is a shame as I think we actually do agree on most of the points. The fact that he (she?) is not keen on the Cayenne or X5's pretty much proves it and then went on to say about the ST170's road holding and has won me right over...
I'd tell them personally, but not sure that he/she would believe me.Genie
