It's not a case of keeping up with the Jones's at all:confused:

Why would it be ?? If I wanted to keep up with the Jones's wouldn't I just buy a BMW?

I have a family like everyone else and a car is a bloomin' big purchase - so I want to get it right...for a lot of years I drove a van (until kids) and then a long wheel base defender - so if you think I am in the tarquin brigade forget it...

I do need a vehicle that can do a number of things - my own car is an oldie but a goodie...and it's been round the clock and it will continue to be my main vehicle BUT it won't tow a caravan...and a motorhome wouldn't be a runaround as well as a workhorse...certainly not in a country area such as ours with roads like ours.

    I know we need a 4 x4 - it's just which one:o

Don't want to put a spanner in the works but have you looked at the new Skoda Yetri........????

It gets very, very, very good revues........For around £20k you get full leather,4x4,parking sensors and "Park assist"(press the button, take your hands off the steering wheel and it parks it for you) especially handy for the girls.(I just know im in for it now):D Oh and I think it gets 4-5 in the Euro Ncap safety tests.VED group G so £150 year road tax.

I'm on my 2nd Octavia and they are very very good.......MPG should be pretty good too..

Volvo would get my vote on looks alone but I've never been keen on Korean cars as they seem to change their designs so often they seem to look dated very quick. Whereas Volvo,
even the older estates don't look bad.
We looked at the xc90 when it first came out and I loved it but the company car tax was too high for my MSE husband and we don't need seven seats so ruled it out, but it looked good then and still looks good now.

Thanks - I did look at the Skoda - and was all excited until I saw that it didn't have the towing capacity we need...otherwise it would certainly have been a contender...if it could park itself it would get my vote, being a girlie :)

    Noooo ,dont do that !!
In these parts ,there are only two kinds of people that drive BMW -
Pizza delivery drivers or drug dealers
I still stand by the Hyundai ,we love ours ,never had problems ( now wheres some wood ....)
Tows like a dream and is as economical as a 'normal' family car .
Word to the wise though about loading the van - You cannot over load the van ,even if the car can tow it ! The caravan will have its own maximum load weight ,ignore this at your peril ,if over loaded joints and panels can give and crack and allow serious damage and water ingress as well causing instability whist towing;)

you seem good at labelling people with your daft outbursts

A change of identity on the forums doesn't cover up the fact that you are an annoying person with nothing contructive or helpful to say.

harder to keep up with the jones's on the school run with a previous model car:p

I don't keep up with the jones', they keep up with me!
Go for whatever car you like or suits your needs GAILEY, the choice has nothing to do with us, we can only give opinions on our preference.

Over the years we've had several. We tow a trailer with 2 large horses and find that the Nissan Terrano was about the best. We've had 2 terranos (which we bought about 2 years old) and both were great and in lovely condition. They were actually too good for just towing horses though.

We had a Kia Sportage when we had just a small pony and that wasn't much cop to be truthful. We've also had Daihatsu, Land Rover and Ssang Yong and a couple of others which I can't recall just now.

We currently use a fairly old Pajero which cost a couple of thousand quid and has air con, leather seats & all the extras and is brilliant. Marvellous value and if it gets knocked or damaged it doesn't matter. It has never let us down and we have no trouble at all with it.
  • While I have nothing against 4x4s in particular, I do think they should only be used by people who actually need their abilities. i.e for offroad, smallholders tractor, heavy tow cars etc.

They shouldn't be used by school run Mums as Chelsea Tractors. The main reason isn't environmental but safety. A 4x4 has a much greater potential to inflict serious injury on others in normal cars, vulnerable road users and pedestrians, a fact which most 4x4 owners seem oblivious to as they roar around in them. (I'm not saying the OP is like this).

I have nothing against them when they are driven with regard to this fact. Perhaps 4x4s should be limited to 60mph. You aren't allowed to tow over that speed anyway and you'll never do that off road either. And speeding fines and punishments should be doubled for 4x4s.
