Choice of 4 x4 - probably daft question

Well this is probably a daft question...but there are so many wise moneysavers out there that I thought I would run it by you all,,,
I have been pondering some time on the choice of our new towcar (and have posted various questions over the last couple of weeks ...so sorry to trouble you all again - but it's a big thing for me)

Got it down I think to two very different options...
Kia Sorento - nice and cheap - depreciation I figure about £8800 over 3 years..so if we kept it for 6 or so we'd be quids in...but - it's a big diesel - highest band..and new model in Feb may make it worth even less
or
Volvo cx90 - expensive but deals would take to about £8000 plus off list...I reckon depreciation over 3 years would be £8934 - so not much more than the Kia in first 3 years...but potential for further depreciation. However, better tax banding, luxury car etc. etc

I THINK the best option is the kia - as after 6 years it would owe me nothing...but does anyone have any other thoughts?
We would be funding the vehicle from savings (which are not earning a great deal at the moment..although all that could change I suppose ?

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts..thanks in advance:D

  • What are you going to be towing?
All you have there is 2 cars and basing your decision in depreciation/luxury. Not necessarily the best choice.
Was last years towcar of the year not a Mondeo Estate? (might have been the year before).
I missed your previous posts, it might have all been in there.

Have you considered either a Honda CRv or hyundai ?
Both have the pulling power but the fuel economy of an average family car rather than a diesel gobbling 4x4 :)

    Hi,
We are going to be towing a decent sized 5 berth caravan - so looking for 2000kg plus braked towing capacity - mondeo's etc aren't really heavy enough to feature. Did have a lr discovery - but got very sick of every holiday being an adventure at the side of the motorway:eek:

transit van gets my vote. if the gypos have been happy with them towing for years then you should be too.

seriously though why not think about a van/small minibus, the transit tourneo perhaps? good fuel economy and the new ones are well specd comfortable vans.

In that case, I seriously recommend a Land Cruiser.

XC90 for me every time, especially since there are some cracking deals on them at the moment if you shop around - www.dealdrivers.co.uk or www.drivethedeal.com

    New xc90 from about £22k.

Having said that, family member has new Freelander which over the last 18 months has been fantastic, and tows a horsebox, but not sure if it would tow the weight of your caravan.
  • What caravan? 2000kg seems very heavy for something towable behind either.
I bought a Range Rover once as I wanted to buy a large Hobby caravan. 3500kg towing ability but illegal to tow the bigger Hobby caravans (1900kg rings a bell) due to the width.

The travellers may use transits, thats still illegal (I looked into it all at the time, even signed an online petition that was knocked back by No 10).

At 2000 kg, the volvo (2250kg?) will be close on the 85% "recommended" so i'd go for the Kia.

Tranny van it is then...coz I live near Appleby anyway:beer:
It's those volvo deals that are tempting me I have to say....we have done 3 landrovers to date...and I'm not prepared to try another - from defender to disco....it has taken me years to persuade my OH they are overpriced trouble, and he eventually agreed that we'd have something else this time.

I personally would be happy with the kia xs - but it is the high tax and possibly gargantuan depreciation that is concerning me - with the approach of the new model...it occurs to me that if we wanted/needed to sell the thing 3 years in it might be a lot easier with the volvo..and whilst the investment is 10K more - it will still hopefully still be in the vehicle, and with the dep rate as it is now putting the dep rate as similar...the interest that we would otherwise (might otherwisw!!) get from that money in savings could well be offset by the 200 a year saving on tax with the volvo...
