ok, not really home made but......
wet wipes, foot spray (the cooling kind?), hand sanitising gel, toth paste, lip salve, t bags/coffee sachets, snack food like pringles, nuts, sweets (not choc!)- especially in small sizes that will fit in bags and pockets!,undies, books, magazines (yes....sometimes the slightly smutty ones go down well! :-) ) paracetamol, immodium.
Dont send anything addressed to A Soldier or anything similar as it will be either returned to you or destroyed. Anything with "banned" goods in will be destroyed too. I have a list somewhere of what NOT to send il post it later when i find it. Best thing to do is get one or two persons address and details and send them plenty and let them share it about!
also check out a charity called SOS (Support our soldiers, I think) they send welfare parcels on a larger scale and also have a comprehensive list of what you should send....mine is just based on experience of what my family and hubby have asked for when away, not just in afghan but generally!
sorry just had a thought dont know if im allowed to do tht, mention SOS charity on here? sorry if not!.....but it is a great cause doing a great job!0 -

Must have a look round this forum part
its free up to 2kg. just bear in mind your wrapping will add some extra weight. nothing worse than getting to the post office to find wrapping it up has bumped it over its 2kg weight as happened to me once  bah!0 -

Puzzle mags, local papers, sports pages from papers, pens, paper, fly sticky strips (apparently they were a godsend). Hot chocolate in sachets as it get cold this time of year at night, packs of cards. Old playstation games not wanted, same goes for dvds, cds. U can make up boxes for special occassions, eg halloween with sweet treats, xmas with cakes and crackers without the banger inside. As well as the usual deodorants (not aerosol), shower gels etc etc.0

I'm just back from the 'stan myself, what i wanted was those powdered things you put into water to make juice (the water is boggin out there), chewing gum as sometimes water was to precious to brush teeth with, some roll on deodrant and a razor or two (they cost a fortune in the EFI out there)
But as every squaddie has a sweet tooth (or 20) those massive bags of Haribo that contain smaller bags were wicked, was able to dish them out to the lads as and when and it ment that i could shove a couple of bags in my body armour for those really naff days
Things like bootlaces etc can be 'obtained' through the system, they are really good in getting those kind of things out.0 -
