Faulty washing machine.

My friend's washing machine has broken down after just two years.
Under the SOGA, would they get in touch with the manufacturer or retailer to discuss the possibility of repair?
Thanks

I dont think there's much chance under the SOGA - a breakdown after two years isn't that unreasonable depending on usage and the quality of the machine.0

OK.
I thought an item had to last a reasonable amount of time.
If the SOGA is the wrong thing to look at, do you know what it would come under please then scouselander.
They paid a fair amount for the machine, but I don't know the exact cost
Thank youThere is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -
Your friends contract is with the retailer however she would have to proof that it is an inherent fault. ie the fault was there at the time of purchase or was a error in the manufacturing process.
Be prepared for a fight as most if not all retailers will refuse to accept responsibility after two years.
It does come under SOGA"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Thank you Optimist.
So the first port of call is the retailer.
I've not come across this before, so no idea how it works.
I will pass the information on thoughThere is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -

Oil filters are consumable parts so your point is at best irrelevant and at worst misleading.0 -

I'm simply asking a question, because I don't know the answer. That is the point of asking questions.
I have been polite, I did not become abusive when the first poster said it wasn't possible and thanked him for his advice, so I wonder why you felt the need for sarcasm?

Thank you derrick. Your post was very helpful.
It seems they would be covered under the SOGA, but difficult to get the retailer to repair, and of course, difficult for the family to be without a washing machine, so chances are they will buy a new one. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. Sorry - but again there is overly simplistic info about SoGA on this site.
The chances of getting this machine repaired under SoGA are VERY remote.
SoGA says that after 6 months the onus is on the purchaser to prove there was fault in the machine when it was purchased.
A washing machine is a particularly difficult item to claim on - the first thing the retailer will say is that you have used it too often, you put the wrong/too much detergent in it, etc, etc
All you can rely on is "good will" from the retailer - don't go in and start telling him about SoGA and the "new" EU directive - because as soon as you do that, he knows he's on to a winner !
Read this: carefully, then read it again and understand it !
