That is correct, they only want bank statements if you declare you have £5,500 and over.0 -

if someone had 10000 but said they had nothing how would they find out? is the jobcentre legally allowed to look into peoples bank accounts or do banks automatically tell the jobcentre? of course most people are law abiding and would probably be too scared to risk being prosecuted for fraud as that is what it would be to lie about what is in your account.0 -

I have personally been involved in advising people who have been caught lying about how much savings they really have and being made to pay back their entire claim, it really is not worth it.0 -
agree 100% with the above post, it just isnt worth it, you will always get chancers though!!! But my advice is not to risk it.0

What will you do with it then if you are wanting to keep your savings under £6000??
we havent got savings of £6000,ive about £1500 and shes expecting 6-7000 in redundancy pay.weve got a year left on our car and some on credit card that we want to pay off as we havent got payment protection on them0 -
Better to wait till your savings are under £6000 as you will get less money.
And they will want to see your partners last few payslips and bank account statements, so no ways around it really!!
well her payslips wont be much use.shes on maternity leave and was due to go back in december so theyll only show her SMat pay which she received the last of in sept.0 -
based on info posted here, if for example someone had £7000 in the bank that would mean they would lose £4 per week of their benefit(£1 for every £250). so the question is how long would they be expected to make last the £1000 excess? well i am just thinking what would there be to stop them going out and spending the £1000 excess on something and then informing the jobcentre they now have less than £6000? could someone do that and have their benefit restored to the full amount?
of course another thing we havent touched on is how having more than £6000 affects housing/council tax benefit.0 -

If the DWP thought that they had done it so that they would be entitled to benefits and it was not a necessary expense it would probably be treated as deprivation of capital and their benefit would not be increased.0 -
so how long would they expect a £1000 excess to last?0
