I didn't want to spend too much because I have the Chef already, so I shopped around a bit and found this one in Sainsburys. It's 300w and feels really quite powerful, and it's also very sturdily built and feels like it'll last for years. It's only £12.99 too which is great. I'm thrilled to bits with it.
Thought I'd post it in case anyone is still looking for a hand mixer, hope it helps someone.
Thanks for bumping this as you've reminded me that I promised to come back and tell you all what I bought in the end. I went with the Kenwood 320 model in the end and it's sufficient for what I require with the added bonus that I could order it online and didn't need to go to the shops :T
Now the next dilemma is a decent set of scales as my cheapo ones from Asda are definitely broken - yesterday I had to borrow a set from my neighbour as I was baking a birthday cake
Any suggestions;):D
ETA: you helpful lot already have a thread on this here I'll spend some time reading that instead0 -
We do a fair bit of baking, and whilst we happily do most things by hand, a hand mixer is one of the three essential kitchen gadgets as far as I'm concerned - the others being a stick blender (was given a Bamix a few years back - lovely!) & a bread maker. But mixers do seem to fall apart rather quickly these days, if you actually use them for cooking rather than just as decorative additions to your kitchen...
The last two have been MrT's value ones, and worked fine until the blades of the beaters collapsed making biscuit dough. I'm currently using the beaters off a dead one that was rather more robust, but can feel them starting to slip, so I think the plastic gears are on their way out now. I don't mind spending more money on a replacement if it's likely to last longer; we're a big household, generally cooking for 6 adult-sized people, some of them hungry hardworking lads, so it's going to take a fair old battering. I've read a few reviews online, but they're usually from people who have only just bought the item, so can anyone recommend one that they've had, and used, for a while, please?
Thanks in advance!Angie - GC Oct 25: £290.57/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
I have this one - have had for some time, and it's brilliant. Because it's a metal body it feels sturdy. I bought it to replace the plastic kenwood mixer I'd had previously - the metal beaters on it had given up the ghost and I seem to recall I had some John Lewis vouchers which I used to buy it.

I know it's not a hand mixer as such, but have you thought about a second hand Kenwood Chef? They have a huge capacity, are practically indestructable and can cope with just about any domestic mixing task. Lots of fun attachments too. Have a look on Ebay or your local Gumtree.Val.0

A Kenwood Chef is my Holy Grail on FreeCycle. I've been on the lookout for one for years.0

I have this cheap one from Sainsburys. It's about two years old now and has taken a battering (including having been dropped many times on a hard floor) but is still going strong. It also seems to be a lot more powerful than lots of hand mixers I've used, even the lowest setting is still quite fast. I would really recommend it over lots of more expensive ones I've used.
As much as I adore my Kenwood Chef (about seven years old, also taken a battering and heavy use) and food processor, I really wouldn't recommend Kenwood's hand mixers. When I was at catering college they used to constantly burn out. Their stick blenders are good though.0 -

I have the same one and it is sturdy, excellent and has a stand. I would buy it again0 -
Buy the best, but shop around for the best price. I still have the Braun MC4050HC I bought in May 2008 for £29.39. It's probably made enough soup to float an aircraft carrier. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

Thanks, everyone! Have to say that excellent though I know the Kenwood Chef is, I'm not prepared to give up that much space for something that wouldn't be in daily use. A hand mixer's fine as the DDs & I actually enjoy doing most things by hand; it's just nice to have the chance of a short cut every now & then. Normally I end up buying industrial tools, but I don't think there is an industrial equivalent, except maybe - the Kenwood Chef!Angie - GC Oct 25: £290.57/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0
