Go and take an actual reading for the leccy, and we will get someone to work out how much you owe, you may be due a refund.

As of right now my meter says 87095, but I have had bills since this one - just more normal ones. This was a big bill that came clean out the blue.

I seriously have no idea what we even spent it on, we have nothing to show for it. I think that in itself is the problem - we were living off credit - just using it for day to day stuff. In the 7 years we've been together (since I was 17) we've never once had a holiday or bought anything lavish - with the possible exception of the car. Which isn't even fancy it's just a Fiat. We don't have big flat screen tellys and all the latest gadgets. :(

Been there, done that. Where do you think my debt came from? It's certainly not flashy cars, HDTV's and lavish holidays. I wish!

My point: You are not alone in this. Keep smiling. It's only money. :o

Are the debt figure accurate? I notice they are all rounded up, are these from the actual statements?

Do you have an overdraft as well?

According to your SOA you have approx £339 before debt repayment, if you enter into a DMP with that, its going to take at least 23 years to repay your debt. I would personally consider bankruptcy, its nothing to be scared of. Have a read of the bankruptcy board. This may be not what you wanted to read, but I believe in being honest with you.

I didn't think a DMP would be reasonable duration. I'm not really scared of bankruptcy, only of losing my home - for the kids sake. This is my only fear with bankruptcy. Or that we will go BR and still struggle horribly just to survive. Does the BR board have plenty info for Scotland? Thank you for all of your advice, I really do appreciate your honesty and taking your time to help me.

Thanks, I hope at some point I will look at it that way too. This is my current aim in life, to stop letting money (or lack of) rule it.

    Can I Clarify:

    86661 26/05/09 estimated
    79450 29/09/09 estimated

and your actual read is 87095

How can your estimate in September be lower than in May 09? I'll get my OH to have alook at it.

argh, that's my cruddy typing I'm sorry. it should be:

    29/09/08 (not 09) - 79450
    30/03/09 - 85086
    26/05/09 - 86661. All estimates.

You will have more money in the future when you stopped the maintenance payments, and this could enable you to increase your DMP amount.

Bankruptcy is an option I would consider, although I have no personal knowledge of this, the bankruptcy board can and will help you, they are a lovely bunch of people on that board.

It all depends on you and your OH, you do need to take professional advice and urgently, in the meantime if you are struggling I can find letters you can send to your creditors to offer them a token payment (these must only be sent to unsecured creditors), let me know.

I have been in severe debt, nearly wreaked my marriage, and I thought I had ruined the childrens lives etc...but years on we are debt free, it wasn't easy, I could have murdered my OH at times for buying daft magazines etc. You both need to be committed to repaying these debts together and have a goal to aim for, cause its bloody tough on the best marriages, I'm waffling, but what I'm trying to say is you and your OH can do this and come out of the other side, but be prepared for the rough patches, and thats what the DFW board is here for....you can rant away as much as you like...

I have example token letters we got from CCCS so I can do those in the meantime as we research our options. I'm not afraid of hard work to become debt free, our whole family will be so much better off for it, in every way.

It looks like your bills have been overestimated. Every time you get a bill make sure you read the meter and give the correct reading to the supplier. Who is the supplier and can you submit on line reads ? How much are the arrears and when will they be paid off so you can change supplier for a cheaper tarriff, 13p/KWh  I pay 10.4p and then get a discount on top of that.
