Capital one keep phoning

  • Yes, I read that thread before, it's where I get some of my inspiration.

Just to be clear, I'm making reduced payments to Capital One and they've had my SOA and everything. I WILL pay them off eventually, it'll just take me a good few years and as long as I pay them back before I retire then I'm happy. Only 17 years 5 months and 2 days until I retire - not that I'm counting.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but why are they phoning you?

I written to them and told them on the phone that I was in financial difficulties, and had offered them reduced payments in line with CCCS debt remedy. The appear to think that they are a special case and should continue to receive the full payments even although they have a copy of my SOA.

It was the shouting at my mum that got me really annoyed. So I wrote stating that I only wanted contact by letter, means I've got proof of anything they say should it go to court as they are not above making promises on the phone which never materialise and they can be quite threatening on the phone.

  • Capital one are an awful company to deal with. I treat them the same way they treat me. They also think that they are something special wanting things others dont ask for like bank statements, wage slips along with the SOA. To shout at your mother is bang out of order. Yur right get everything in writing. Best of luck
  • My debt with Cap One is the only one I'm worried about. We cleared it before & asked to close the account loads of times, but they literally wouldn't close the card! Also said they would charge us if we didn't use the card. If only I know now what I knew then.
    Debt @ LBM 29/12/08 - £49044! Now £44684.
    Fat loss 29/85lbs // £100 into £10k £243.07/£10k
    HSBC Loan 9658 // HSBC CC 3484 // HSBC CC 1464 // DP's 779 // Car 0% 4851 // Halifax OD 1348 // HSBC OD 1.5k // HSBC OD 1k // Barclays OD 400 // IOMOM 4400 // S Loan 15k // Cap1 £800
  • Yep, I tried to close my account when I got my card down to zero balance about 3 years ago. They said that they'd charge me if I didn't use the card or closed the account.

Foolishly I didn't challenge them on it at the time, and being weak willed I started using the card again.

They won't get away with it this time, as I've turned a new leaf and am determined to be debt free and with savings by the time I retire. It's only taken me 30 years of working to decide that but better late than never. Of course my plan might change should I come across a nice millionaire who wants me - don't think that will happen but I can dream - I've always fancied being a kept woman.

OMG.....I can't believe this!!! Can they actually do this??????????

I'm just waiting for the calls to start again this week. I've contacted them last week to say I'd be late making payment again........Even though I speak to them advising them of my situation, they still call. I've made a token payment today but I know I'll be harrassed soon!!

If you want to deal only in writing they need to make sure they have the right address for you! Also what about people who say 'wrong number' then give a fake address meaning the creditor has no way of chasing the debt?

It is a point, I suppose. But really there is no evidence of that being the case here.

  • I don't often come onto this site but I was rather surprised at that comment......appears rather smug and pointless. As you say, this is supposed to be a helpful site?

I too have been tearing my hair out with Capital one over such small amounts. I have never had any issues until the last couple of months. An instant bank transfer took longer than five days for them to process...then then charged a late payment charge....this took me £12 over my limit.....then they charge an overlimit charge ontop of this.
I've written to them to complain and say this is completely iresponsible and they write back asking me to call them. meanwhile, I have been receiving six to eight calls a day from foreign call-centre staff either hanging up or demanding that I give them my personal details. I yell at them to stop and they call straight back.

I've now changed my number as I was getting so stressed out by these phone calls.

I'd never had an issue until the last couple of months and owe them very little in comparison to the average debt....yet they are harassing me!

    Hope your situation improves!:j

Of course they have the correct address, it's the same one that they send the statement to every month but for some reason are reluctant to write to. Could it be they know they are on shaky ground and the debt isn't enforceable.
