just want to echo what others have said...the actual deed is very peaceful. if it is possible you may also want to see if your vet will come to your home, they do charge extra for this, but personally i found it much easier to deal with in my own home, with my little girl falling into eternal sleep on her favourite pillow with her much loved brother close by x

It feels like such a terrible decision, but I think you will regret it if you let her hang on til she's really at the end. You think you'll feel guilty for shortening her life by even a few days, but it really is kinder to have her PTS before she deteriorates any further.

I had to have my lovely choc Lab PTS earlier this year and if I'd known it would be so peaceful, I would have done it a week earlier. She had 2 days struggling to get up and didn't eat at all on the last day. I wish I had been brave enough to say goodbye earlier.

hun its time now - I know how you feel - my last cat had FIV and looked terrible from the time i rescued him - the vet said he doubted if Nicky would last two weeks - he was with us three years - but the last couple of days he wasnt interested in his fave food - chinese takeaways out of foil dish - and didnt even react when i lit his fave incense stick. (just realised that sounds weird - but he loved my incense sticks and would sit with his nose just in the smoke and a blissful look on his face). I really think i left it too long and he was suffering - just too polite to let me know.
i held him when vet did the injection as i did for the cat before him. and hun - its upsetting - but not as bad as the guilt you feel for letting them suffer!
let him go now. he will take your love with him.

Bless you sweetie. It is so hard. We lost one of our beautiful cats on 13th Aug last year and it still hurts so much.
I must confess I haven't even been able to read all this thread as things are still too painful.
Our Phoebe died in our arms on our bed. It was a peaceful ending and alhtough she was poorly and having numerous tests she wasn't in pain and her death was unexpected.
I guess it all depends on the quality of life of your beloved friend and how you are coping. Every cat is different. We had my very old boy PTS six years ago (he was very poorly did not deserve the life he would have had. I know it was the right thing to do. However I regret not getting the vet to come to us.
WHen you lose any pet the "what ifs" go on and on. All any of us can do is what we consider to be our best.
I am so sorry for your trouble and pray that both of you may have peace.
    God bless.
(I hope this makes some sense I am surprised at just how much things still hurt.)
    Take care.
    A xx

I'm so sorry to hear this, Fatpants.

I went through this earlier in the year, with my cat Spook, who had an abdominal tumour.

She was perky enough in herself but didn't have a great deal of energy - she spent most of the day lying outside on the bench in the sun, and we would carry her in at night or she would have stayed there! Once inside she would just crouch by the cat flap, but if we opened the fridge she would come running just like she always did.

After a few weeks, she refused to eat cheese (normally her favourite) and I knew then that there wasn't much time left. Her legs started getting wobbly, and I said to myself that I didn't want to get to the stage where she couldn't move of her own accord. I told my OH that I wanted to take her to the vets, but he was very resistant and begged me to leave it for a few days. The next day she collapsed as she was trying to get up the step to the back door, and he had to carry her in. We decided then that her time was up, and it was better to put her out of her suffering (I assume she was suffering, even though she didn't show it).

It wasn't an easy decision, but what I will say is that the actual act of getting her put to sleep was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. We were in the room, and I stroked her whilst the vet gave her the injection. It was almost instantaneous and I know she didn't suffer - in fact it was so quick I didn't think she was gone, and I had to put my hand on her again to make sure.

My heart goes out to you - it really was a difficult time for me.
geri, not a cat person, but your post really moved me. That ending at the Vet, oh my, the tears fell.

thank you all so much for your lovely replies, some have brought tears to my eyes! She had a good weekend, seemed perky and ate some chicken and ambrosia creamed rice, although this morning was back to herself again. The look in her eyes this morning told me all that I need to know - that she knows shes going and that PTS is the best thing.
thank you all so much xx
  • I am so sorry you are going through what every pet lover dreads. It's the worst feeling in the world when it's your turn and I just want you to know that I am thinking of you xx
  • I'm so sorry for what you're going through - I hope you're all right.

We've had the same problem with our ten year old cat. She had kidney problems for the last few months, and about a month ago we nearly lost her. She recovered a little, but not much. She had a little appetite and would drink a little water and cat milk, but couldn't eat very much and continued to lose weight.

We knew the time was coming, but really hoped she'd rally a little bit, as she wasn't very old. Unfortunately, she stopped eating and drinking at the weekend, was in obvious discomfort most of today, and much as it's breaking our hearts right now, we brought her to the vets and he put her to sleep most peacefully in my arms. She quietly slipped away, and we know we've done the right thing, it's just very sad at the moment. We've lost an old and dear friend.
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.
