Why do people bother bidding when they dont want to bid close to the reserve price?

We're often winning items as a solitary bidder because of others being put off by reserves, so it's not like we don't practice what we preach, as it were...

12 months at least.

There is nothing here that supports what you are saying though.

I'm going to set up an reserve auction and use one of my other accounts to check iot out.

apparantly it has changed i bidded on this so called challenge an it has recently changed.... however the 'seller' is still sore that i knew better than paying up for an empty auction...
