SELLER WANTS 50p EXTRA TO COVER PAYPAL FEES

If the seller has used the official paypal logo and hasn't metioned it in his description that he wants the buyer to cover fees then it's a bit cheeky but I don't blame the guy to be honest. If I were the buyer and the guy has good feedback I'd offer to do bank transfer instead if he wanted to avoid fees.

I can't see any reason it should be in ebays rules that sellers can't charge buyers paypal fees other than the fact that it would encourage people to use other payment methods and paypal(ebay) would lose out. Sellers pay to list then pay again in final value fees when the item sells so I don't see why they should pay a third time when accepting payment!

Because they (the seller) know upfront what their fees are going to be, and should price their item accordingly. How you can advocate paying someone who is actively attempting to break the rules by a method that allows no redress is beyond me. It's not cheeky, it's dishonest. How can you trust someone like that? The fact of the mattter is, by staing that paypal may be used, the seller is already getting a possible benefit which may result in a higher price that otherwise - there are many people here who wouldn't even consider purchasing an item if it couldn't be paid for by paypal.

The way I get money towards my fees is charge a little more for postage as if I sell a DVD I charge around £1.70 for delivery and this covers postage costs and the price of the envelope and the remainder goes towards paypal / ebay fees.

At the end of the day no-one like paying the ebay / paypal fees but they are here to stay and it's the sellers responsibility to pay for his/hers own fees and not the buyer and if I was on the receiving end I would pull out of the auction and go through ebay as they will end up giving a warning to the seller and it's the same with sellers who try to avoid fees be selling an item for 99p but charging £20 delivery so they can avoid/reduce fees.

At the end of the day if you dont like paying ebay/paypal fees don't sell on ebay

As said before don't even entertain a bank transfer.
I would email the seller and tell them you have every intention of paying, but not the extra 50p as it is breaking the rules - then see what they come back with.
I wouldn't just deduct the money.
The old rules were you could charge extra for pay pal so the seller may just assume they still can.

It doesn't really matter whether we don't think it should be in the rules or not. The fact is that ebay do not allow a surcharge to be added, and that is the end of it.

If a seller does not agree with that rule then the simple action is to not offer paypal at all. That way they avoid the fees they believe to be unreasonable and don't risk getting into trouble from ebay for breaking their user agreement. Also, and more importantly and has been mentioned before, the seller has more protection as the moment they surcharge all seller protection is lost.

Look at the time of the post...maybe one too many drinks? Or maybe I can't read properly after last night, I don't know.

With regards to PayPal fees; the seller should not charge extra but I note a few people who do this and eBay doesn't seem to do a lot in terms of disciplining them...another extra charge I don't like is when a seller says VAT at 17.5% will be added to the auction, it annoys me as these sorts of costs should be taken into account before listing in my opinion. And the fact is they tend to get a lot less because of it...so it would probably work out the same anyway! But that's a different matter altogether

Paypal is supposedly "more secure" than other forms of payment because of the chargeback facility. In practice, this means nothing.

As a long time buyer and seller, I have found that you are at risk from Paypal:

As a seller, if you send something out and someone files a chargeback, even if you have sent the item via insured post then Paypal will automatically deduct the money from your account unless it was sent by a signature delivery service. There is no obligation on the buyer to actually go through any of the requisite insurance claim processes that can recover compensation for the item.

As a buyer, if you file a chargeback and the seller has no money in their Paypal account you will not receive anything back.

So frankly, a lot of the "security" of Paypal is a facade by eBay to persuade you that it is somehow safer to use. It isn't. It just makes more money for eBay, because they own it.

I used eBay for years before Paypal was around, and paid for hundreds of items with cheques or bank transfer. If you use common sense and buy from people with good feedback, or ensure you get contact details beforehand then to be honest you are just as safe as paying with Paypal.

Also, there wasn't always a rule against surcharging for Paypal. Until eBay bought Paypal, and revised the entire European T&C in order to make it possible for them to make a rule against it. And whatever they may say, it's not a matter of just 'factoring it into the price'. It's an AUCTION site. Auction houses almost invariably charge the fees to the buyer - it's only eBay that seems determined to foist it all on the seller, in their drive to turn ebay from an auction site into some kind of super-shop where everything is fixed-price with the fees "factored in". In an auction you can't 'factor in' the costs, you take what you get. Or else, as many people do, you hide the surcharge in the "postage" costs - but I feel that is both misleading, and unfair to those who choose not to use Paypal, because they end up effectively subsidising those who do.

Still ... as has been pointed out, it is against the t&c so if you want to make a fuss about it and get them censured by eBay, you can.

As a seller it is wonderful as it is free, as a buyer I wouldn't do it as once you've transferred the money you can't get it back whatever happens.

Paypal might not be 100% risk free even for a buyer but it is the only payment method that gives any protection at all.
