End contract with Vodo

Help!!I want to end my contract with Vodophone as I am going abroad sailing for some time. vodophone tell me that each time I have upgraded my handset I have taken out a new contract. The latest change/contract was in March and runs for 18months, or I can pay off the rental charges at £270. Is this correct
