I'd appreciate your comments please on my Samsung microwave

I purchased a Samsung microwave on 23.08.08 from Comet, at the cost of £79.99.
I noticed after approx 10 months that the white interior paint of the microwave was bubbling, however as I had not ever owned a microwave before thought this was normal.
On Monday I discovered, not only had the paint chipped off in several places but it also started to rust, so I looked on Samsung website FAQ, and on there it stated that if you microwave started to rust, please phone 0845 xxxx xxxx, and depending on the age of the machine will offer you a refund, (I will find the link so you can see for yourself in a mo, couldn't get the link to work, so I have copied and pasted the FAQ).
My Microwave is rusting underneath the glass plate. What do I do?
<SPAN style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB" lang=EN-GB>You need to send Samsung the back plate (which has the make, model and serial number) & a proof of purchase then we can consider a refund based on the age of your unit.
So I phoned Samsung, and I was told to discard of the machine as it was unrepairable, and I that I would be offered £10 as gesture of goodwill, i decline this offer stating that I was disappointed with the fact the machine was only 13 months old.
If I wanted to discard a machine after 13 months, I would have bought a Smartprice one from Asda at the cost of £27.99.
I have written to Head Office stating my grievance along with proof of purchase and serial board from the back of the machine and I await there reply.
What are your thoughts on this? What should I expect to happen? other than them saying sorry, its out of warranty.

You can claim from Comet under the Sale of Goods Act but you can't insist on a replacement or full refund since you've had 13 months' use.0

I appreciate your reply, however Comet wanted nothing to do with it when i phoned them on Monday, and I have heard something of the EU directive of 2 years and something mentioned about 6 years also, but I wouldn't class this as a high value product and I wondered if this would make a difference, and since Samsung stated on their website to contact them direct, thats what I did later. I just don't think £10 is reasonable for being 1 month out of warranty. Absolutely poor workmanship if nothing else, and told to discard it really annoyed me, it works perfectly well, it has a 6 inch section of chipped paint and rust spots.
What would you accept? I would be more than happy with half price, is that unreasonable? I must add the microwave is now in garage, I won't use it again as the lady stated it can be unsafe to do so.0 -
Most microwaves I've known people to own typically last somewhere between 5-10 years. Based on that, if their own policy deems the item to be unuseable/unrepairable due to a manufaturing fault; then I would expect to be offered a figure taking into account the age & cost, on a pro-rata basis.0

I agree The Pedant, what would you settle for? I mentioned in the post above I would settle for half price, is that reasonable?0

Comet don't get to decide that it's nothing to do with them. It's their legal responsibility. And if Samsung are saying that the product is actually unsafe to use, you may have a claim on those grounds as well. Contact Consumer Direct and ask for advice.0 -
