Europcar unwanted insurance

We recently hired two cars from Europcar Ltd in Ireland at Kerry Airport. After we returned to the UK and the credit card charges were refunded we noticed the amount repaid was much lower than the amount originally charged. We contacted them to ask why and discovered that a charge for PBM at €6.00 a day had been added to our car hire without our noticing or being asked if we wanted it. As we hired two cars this resulted in an additional charge of €96.00 being placed on our credit cards.
I am very angry about this as we already had holiday insurance which would have covered us for any personal injuries. At the airport it was quite correctly pointed out when we signed for the car that we had refused Super CDW (and were therefore liable for up to €1,200 for any damage to the vehicle) and that we had been charged for a full tank of petrol which would be refunded if the car was returned with a full tank. No mention was made of PBM insurance, if we wanted or needed it or even what it was supposed to cover us for.
We have asked for this to be refunded but they have refused, simply saying we signed the agreement and therefore utilised the insurance. This is such a con - surely insurance should not be added by default - only if the hirer specifically is told and confirms they want it.

I too have been hit with a charge I have no idea what for! I specifically declined the additional, offered insurance accepting the high excess in the event of an accident. There was no mention of any other charges. I have to wait until Monday to find out what it is but I am furious when as far as I am aware I had paid for everything up front and would not incur any further charges.0
