I think you're being a tad pessimistic! Alarmist even. My first thought was Index Linked certificates from NSI. But the first reply said that. I've been stocking up on them myself recently.

Your first question was about protecting your savings against inflation. Inflation Linked certificates will do exactly that. Job done, have a beer.

Yes the country might go bust (or the planet might get invaded by aliens like Independence Day), but if that happens the UK won't be the only one, and you'll have a lot more to worry about than your 50k.

EDIT: Although you can only buy 15k of certificates with each issue.
