Copy it onto a USB pen drive or burn it to a CD, then install it on the laptop.

Thanx kiwibreaks - yes I asked for help before to try & sort it But can only try & get it going on my one day off a week when son is in school, 1st time since then that I've tried to get it going - he's nipped out now but I can't get it out in case he comes back, but just before i went out this afternoon I managed to get the wireless loaded, as in I had to pick up our connection name & the blu light came on to signify it was picking up the signal, but it still won't connect to the internet
this is what I find confusing - post 3 talks of downloading the driver, but how can I do this on the laptop if I can't logon to the internet to access the download page

& the 1st reply talks about a wifi card being loaded, I don't know what card he's talking about?

You really are giving out confusing info to people who are trying to help you!

Can you now pick up your wireless signal or not?

Can you connect your laptop to the internet using a CABLE while you set it up?

Perhaps your wireless hub has some sockets on the back that'll take an ethernet cable, your laptop should have a similar socket? can you get an ethernet cable from somewhere (for free/low cost <£3, not the £29.99 high street version)?

If so, you can bypass your wifi card and any wireless security stettings and get straight onto the internet for downloading drivers / updates which will get your wifi working and allow you to ditch the cable

I did say in post 21 that I had managed to get the wireless on - I had to choose from about 3 options but our name was at the top of the list so chose that & it confirmed that it was on & the blue led status light was then lit up, but it still wouldn't log on to the internet - I do apologise for not knowing what info to give you - I've never used wireless so don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for & I've never used memory sticks & the like - i just pick up my email, shop & use word for letters & thats about it

i'm very grateful to everyone who has taken the time to respond with their time & knowledge - you must think I'm very stupid - I'm not, just not savvy as far as computers are concerned

the latest state of play is XP is loaded - the wireless signal (is that what WIFI is?) is now showing as being received - but still can't logon to internet

won't be able to get the machine out until Sat afternoon when he's at football & will try & put your suggestions to good use - I need to buy a blank cd to try - only ever downloaded things like Adobe straight to my desktop

thank you once again for all the help

That won't be necessary - your wireless connection is working, which means the driver has already been installed.

What happens when you start Internet Explorer?

I know and that's why a said that others should re-read post #21.

When you 'see' your network name (SSID) does it say that it is secure or encrypted?

Normally when trying to connect to your router for the first time, you would have to enter the wireless encryption key or passphrase. When you have done this the first time, it can be configured to automatically connect to your router every time that you switch on the laptop.

If you can't connect, you will need to supply the make/model number of your wireless router for more help to be given regarding encryption and connecting.
