this getting too technical for me, unable to spend a lot of money sorting this out as cash really tight at mo - was hoping to give to son for Christmas but may have to wait until next year to take it to somewhere like PC World

Can't really understand why you did a reinstall of XP if you don't know what you are doing! It's very easy to sort out and you know that the wireless did work before you messed with it. Some people give up far too easily.

You have not given enough information to get help on a Techie forum! Exactly which laptop do you have?

Its an Advent 7107 Notebook PC - my deceased relative didn't have windows Xp on it but another Windows, can't remember which but it was bought new from PC World in 2006 - I'm pretty sure that when my husband brought it home it had the blue light lit to say it was picking up our connection - we have a wireless thingy connected to the main PC for my other sons laptop & their Xbox live

because of content on computer it was neccessary to wipe clean before being given to a minor!! & I was too embarrassed to take it as it was to a shop to get it sorted because of same reason which is why I had to attempt to clear it myself

Well that model has a Intel Pro 3945ABG wireless LAN adaptor fitted and until you install the necessary driver so that XP can communicate with the device, the wireless won't work.

  • the only thing we have found is a cdrom that says driver & utility but as per post 1 I can't get it to work
  • Background - given laptop from deceased relative & needed to wipe it clean before given to my youngest as a gift - so reinstalled Windows XP on it but only problem is the wireless will not pick up on it - someone suggested reinstalling the drivers & we've now found the cd rom for the driver amongst his effects but the wireless won't reinstall

    Follow the instructions here: http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-025417.htm

The first section with the link to the driver update utility is the one I would follow. Running the tool should detect what card is in the machine and download the correct drivers

    which means?
It means that the switch isn't turning the card on so it isn't being detected. It seems likely to me that the button operates some software that should be running rather than directly switching the wifi card on and off. For instance the netbook I'm currently using has no switch at all and the wifi is turned on and off by software controlled by a function key.

I remember when you originally brought up the subject of wiping this laptop and recommended at the time that you check to see if it had a recovery partition because resetting to default configuration from that would include all the required drivers and accessory software. It may be that reinstalling XP has wiped out any such partition that it did have but it may not have - does it come up with any options at boot time which mention repairing the computer or something other than normal or safe mode boot?

If that CD came with the laptop and you have now installed XP, it will be of no use! You can get the necessary Intel driver for XP from the site linked in post #3.

The other problem here if the laptop was originally Vista (possible if it was bought at the end of 2006) and XP has been installed on it then then it won't pass MS key validation when it eventually does get online.
  • Thanx kiwibreaks - yes I asked for help before to try & sort it But can only try & get it going on my one day off a week when son is in school, 1st time since then that I've tried to get it going - he's nipped out now but I can't get it out in case he comes back, but just before i went out this afternoon I managed to get the wireless loaded, as in I had to pick up our connection name & the blu light came on to signify it was picking up the signal, but it still won't connect to the internet
