I stumbled upon the British Heart Foundation bookshop in Reading today(confusing pun not intended) and just wanted to say how impressed I was. This is one of their specialist book shops as listed on their site http://www.bhf.org.uk/ . Very wide selection, great price (well, charity of course, not just bargains!), and very friendly knowledgeable chap in there.

I also live in Reading and the BHF bookshop is excellent, the prices are reasonable unlike the Oxfam bookshops around the corner. The stock is in very good condition the book are perfect - no yellow pages or damaged spines.

There is an Amnesty bookshop here in Cambridge and it's great, on Mill Road towards Romsey Town. The Oxfam bookshop in town is way overpriced.

The thing is here, the shops know how much the books are worth cos there's a lot of demand for them, whereas back home in Bradford at charity shops books are cheap as chips because there isn't the demand, hence why there are no dedicated book shops from charities, only the standard charity shops.

Reading also has an Amnesty book shop they are quite selective with the books they sell and are expensive for most books.

Maybe it differs from area to area. Then again, Reading expensive might be different to Cambridge expensive. lots of lah-de-dahs round here who don't think twice about throwing money about :)

The books I got from BHF shop did come with a bookmark suggesting I might return them to the shop after I've read them. Hmm, moaning about charity shop prices sounds a bit fussy (!) but Oxfam do price some stuff oddly.

Not to bore you with my whole shopping trip, but after coming out of the shop I saw some Harry Potters in the window and went back in. I asked if he had a specific one from the series. He went to get it -- he asked which cover variation I'd like, since he had more than one, and I handed over my 1 pound! I left some change in the donation box...

Sorry if i sound odd moaning about oxfam prices bu in the Reading's music oxfam they charge £3 - £4 for a CD single and the bookshop there aren't anybook for under £4.

It's also because i work for a uk charity - Help The Aged running their Reading Charity Shops so i compare alot of thing to my shops.

The Oxfam Bookshop in Cambridge charges list price for books...and they're second hand!

If that makes me fussy then I'm guilty as charged.

sorry about my wording -- I was agreeing with you! It just feels like a taboo subject, saying charity shop prices are high... Oxfam *should* be the first place you think of for a bargain, but certainly when it comes to books, it isnt.
Maybe its to stop the e-bayers selling on (??).

    On the subject of books:

At one of the shops i manage we are over flowing with books so we knocked some of the ones which had been there for a month or so and sold the for
20p each. A man bought one book then came back the next day and told us he'd got £40 for it!!
Luckily he had a concious and gave us £20 for it.

It's a shame about oxfam because they get good stuff in but they're about the dearest for a few bits.
