This is what I am trying to achieve, Am i right in saying that i need to get a Router with built in modem.......................

    HELP

Well, that's what I have. A Linksys WAG354G connected to my desktop. To share files you need to set up sharing on the folders you want to share (right-click > sharing and security). I'm no networking expert at all, but I managed to sort it out with a bit of help from Google. TBH, I'm still learning about all this!
  • Would this do the job?

Do I need the Laptop card as well?

If I get this I can discard of my current adsl modem and just plug this into my pc, plug the card into the laptop and off I go with a wireless laptop that can connect to the internet.

Can you file share with this as well?

That's very similar to my router, so it should be fine. But you don't need the laptop card if you are connecting with the Acer laptop because it has wireless capability built-in. I got my brother to help me set it up, but yes your router will replace your ADSL modem and allow you to share files over a wireless network.
  • Thanks,

I have just got a network card for my pc and the wireless modem but can't seem to be able to take the case of my DELL base unit????????????

It seems to have rivets rather than screws!

I have rung around all the local Tesco`s and no laptop`s left.

So which is best bet the Acer travelmate 2424WXMI from laptopsdirect for £379 or the Dell Inspiron 1300 at £349.

Just need it for home stuff, surfing the web, photos etc.

    Thanks
    April Grocery challange £175

    Spent week 1 £29.90
    week 2 £62.64, TOTAL £92.54

    Dell without a doubt.

I'd reccommend the £350 Inspiron over the £299 Acer, nevermind the Acer machine at £380 :)

Having been looking at the Dell, at the mo it comes with 1024mb and 60Gb as free upgrade, but what about this Express card slot instead of the normal PCMCIA?
    What differance does that mean?

Means that you can't use PCMCIA cards with it. If you don't need to use items such as 3G Data Cards then you will not be affected by that, and you will be able to use ExpressCards when (if) they become more popular. :)

As for the 1GB memory, that must be on the higher priced Pentium-M Dell Inspiron 1300, which I don't think is as good a buy as the 6000/640 due to the 400mhz FSB.
