The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt

Homework and The Sims do not go well together
To be honest, I think the specs on that are above and beyond what will be needed for school homework and The Sims! My laptop has 1GB RAM and an 80GB HD, and I have lots of college work and several Sims games on here no probs. However, if you plan on having it a LONG time, it would probably be good in the long run as you shouldn't need to upgrade it. But 12 year olds aren't always the carefullest (is that even a word?) so maybe a second hand/refurbished one may be a safer bet.
Are you running Sims2? What sort of spec is your laptop?
My daughter wants a laptop for xmas, but wants to be able to run sims2 on it.0 -

Mine is an Advent ERT2250 (Steer WELL clear! There's a thread in this subforum about how shoddy they are!) 80GB, 1GB RAM, shared graphics card. It can be a bit slow, but I think that could be down to the shared graphics card (I dunno anything about graphics cards, so I couldn't tell you which one I have in here!)
1GB is probably the minimum you'll need to run it well - however, lots of laptops come with 2GB these days.
Og Troff - could you link to that? My laptop's doing my head in (won't charge properly due to a broken power socket and switches itself off when it feels like it!) and I'm looking for something small and CHEAP!

I have come up with the following from looking today.
Any advice?
I just want a laptop to surf the net (at home and out and about) do some work on, watch DVD's on and that's about it.
Nothing to replace my home PC, but more than one of those EEE type things
