939 - I was singing the praises of pcworld's refurb range on page 96...the advent I ordered (see the post for a link) turned up and has been great..absolute bargain for just over £250 with quidco 2.5%. I too would normally have steered clear of pcworld, but after much trawling the refurbs were good vfm.

This video does a good job explaining:

As you can see installing ram is as easy as building with lego ;) Well that's how I put it to people... My elder sister who knows nothing about the insides of computers managed to upgrade the ram on her desktop herself, so I reckon most people will be able to it with ease.

Two 1GB sticks can be bought for around £25 on ebay or any decent computer hardware site (aria, scan, dabs.)

Around 80% of laptops will have a compartment for upgrading the ram like the one in the video.

    That's great, thanks!

    Hey all,

I am looking to get another laptop. I have a 3 year old or so big beefy Dell which is serving me just fine, but it's quite a lump to take around as it's a bigger screen. I also have a nice Dell desktop at home. What I am looking for is a very small laptop, 12" or so screen, that I can travel with as I am on trains a lot and my Dell laptop is just too bulky. I would want to surf the net mainly, wireless of course, but also use Office on occasion but not that much.

I was hoping to get something sub £200 if poss and was thinking of Ebay but I am overwhelmed by them all!

Have seen a few Sony Vaio which I know are small, also a few Dell 400 Latitudes. What should I be looking for? Any recommendations on spec?

Doesn't have to be the fastest whizziest machine in the world. My old Dell laptop isn't but does the job just fine. I am looking for smallness and portability and if it's not cost an arm and a leg then the odd bashing whilst travelling won't matter.

Oh, and I can certainly upgrade ram in a machine, so not completely befuddled!

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Many thanx oh knowledgeable ones!

  • i hate the dell service, although their vostro laptop seems great. Is there anywhere else i can buy a laptop with similar specs??? i.e:-

screen size must be 15" or above
    core 2 duo processor
    2gb ram
    120gb + hdd
better gfx card such as nvidia 8400gs

    i have a budget of £400

lurker - try pcworld's refurbs, as discussed earlier. Should be able to pick up what you're after under-budget
